Late Breaking while I was typing this from ABC News:

 

 * 50% believe Trump should suspend his campaign.

       

* 63% of Americans say that the charges approved by a grand jury in Georgia related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state are serious.

If this continues, look for the Republicans in Congress to finally come out publicly with what they've been saying privately about Trump (an existential threat to democracy) in order to keep their jobs, hold the House and have a chance to flip the Senate.

 

From a new (Wednesday) Associated Press poll:

"Some 53% of those surveyed approve of the U.S. Department of Justice indicting Trump for his alleged scheme to stay in power illegally, compared to just 30% who disapprove."

 

"The survey, which was conducted from last Friday to Monday, also found that 53% of all voters say they definitely wouldn’t vote for Trump for president in 2024."

In the latest Fox News poll (Thu. 8/17) Biden beats:

 

Haley by 6

 

Scott by   6

 

DeSantis by 5

 

Ramaswamy by 4

While  Biden could probably beat Trump, Trump could still definitely win.  No one disputes that. Biden could fall on his face, literally or figuratively, close to the election. He could have a disastrous debate. His Hunter problem could explode, especially as an October surprise. All indications are that it will be close, decided in 5 states by a few hundred thousand voters.

 

Trump being defeated is the only thing that matters. Democracy has survived many Republican presidents, but it wouldn't survive a second Trump presidency in recognizable form. To unnecessarily risk a second Trump presidency for the reasons you gave is reckless.

It won't change MAGA, but the hope -- and my belief -- is that the criminal charges will cause enough independent voters who can't stand either Biden or Trump to vote for Biden as the lesser of two evils.That's how 2024 is shaping up: The evil of two lessers.

 

P.S. Unlike most never-Trumpers, I hope the trials *don't* start before the election. The chances of one hold-out juror causing a mistrial is substantial, and a hung jury would be spun by Trump as proof of a witch hunt and could have traction with low information voters.

Haley, Scott, and Rommyswami aren't serious candidates. Florida Man has an activated self-destruct mechanism. Trump will be the Republipig candidate for lack of any viable alternative. Of course, some rising star could still come out of nowhere.

 

Re Trump actually defeating Biden in 2024: I agree, it could happen. But him serving another term? No fucking way would that be allowed. Somebody would take him out. Guaranteed.

 

But I think that by far the most likely outcome is an epic curb-stomp by Biden, not because he's Mister Wonderful but because by November 2024, Mister Awful will be in very deep doo-doo, with several felony convictions being a very real possibility. And if the wheels of justice are still grinding by then? That will certainly give enough voters pause. They won't have to hold their noses and vote for Biden. They'll just have to decline to vote for the Turd.
