Old white men, especially those with dementia, have been a loyal part of Trump's base for the last four years. Routinely, Trump has polled among them with double-digit leads against all of his opponents--Hillary, Biden, common decency, ethics.
He's now sunk to just even money among the old coots, with only 50% approving of him (still way above the overall national average) and an even split between those who say they'll vote for him and those who say they won't.
Reasons cited by poll respondents indicate that while many dislike him intensely and always have, they were willing to support him because they thought he was good for the economy or tough on those eeeeevil IMMIGRANTZ or some such. But now, they're disgusted with him for his botched response to the coronavirus. A number of them also are repulsed by his bullying, racist response to the recent protests.
The observation I make is that since he retains a fair degree of support, if he hadn't massively fucked up practically everything he's done this year, he would still be a favorite in the upcoming election. Hell, he could have crafted a few symbolic gestures, mouthed a few platitudes, and otherwise just played golf and kept his mouth shut, and he wouldn't be in the position he is now. But he's been too stupid to avoid self-destructing.
I wonder if my favorite recurring character, the Breakfast Bloviator, is wavering in his Trump-love. If Trump loses the Bloviator, all is lost.
