Especially since the service life of the batteries is usually only 100,000 miles or so. A lot of used EVs go on the market when their batteries need replaced but the owner doesn't want to fork over three grand or more.
I do believe that while electricity isn't free by any means (except at some public charging stations), the equivalent cost of a "gallon's worth" of electricity is a bit more than $1. So factor in 3 cents per mile for battery replacement and you're still ahead of the game.
