I just enrolled as a volunteer for a Covid-19 vaccine study

Should be double-blind.  Not sure about randomizing.  Probably depends on the study, but can I and my generally healthier social group be randomized along with those in nursing homes or prisons or people with 4 kids coming home from school?  Maybe.  Research is tricky.

Randomized double-blind placebo controlled is said to be the gold standard of research.

That's what I'm wondering---if someone gets the vaccine (not the placebo) and doesn't contract Covid, is that because they got the vaccine or were in a low-risk group to begin with?

It's like, the only way to really test a bulletproof vest is to shoot someone who's wearing one. (Wait a minute--wasn't that a short scene in "Breaking Bad"?

That's exactly why lots and lots of data is needed.  Can't draw results anecdotally or from limited numbers in studies.  I wish I knew more.

Edited to add that another objective is to determine safety of the drug, reactions, side effects, etc.
