cjen, I don't think it will work out. If Trump and his lawyers knew about this scheme to have Manafort serve as a double agent, they could all be charged with obstruction of justice and possibly witness tampering. All reporting seems to indicate that they did. I am not so sure Manafort and Trump got one over on Mueller because at some point Mueller knew Manafort was not telling the truth. Mueller could have easily fed Manafort false information. Based on that false information Manafort could have said to Trump something like Mueller doesn't know about our agreement with Assange and the Russians. Trump could have taken this information and perjured himself on those written answers he provided to Mueller thinking he was in the clear.
Think about the timing of how this played out. Mueller didn't announce that Manafort broke his plea until after Trump turned in those written answers. Trump said he completed the questions and they would be turned over tomorrow or the next day on the 20th. On the 26th Mueller filed a status report with the court announcing that Manafort broke his plea. That was the first business day the court was open after Trump turned in his answers.
Furthermore, if it were a win for Trump, he wouldn't have gone into full meltdown mode on the day the story broke lashing out at the investigation. He is acting like someone that knows his scheme is unraveling rather than someone that is putting points on the board.
It is beginning to look a lot like Trump, Manafort, Assange and maybe a few others committed some type of treasonous act and that Mueller has evidence of it. I suspect he has tapes/transcripts of the meetings between Manafort and Assange that were provided by Ecuador.
