Charles Dickens' novella "a work of social commentary" first published in 1843. Dickens' family experienced debtors prison in his youth, thus his focus on the "underserved" in his writings [some would say 'undeserving'].
From then to now this is debated: who, if anyone (and how much), should give of their own resources to help those who aren't self-sustaining for whatever reason.

And of course, the standard justification for being selfish and uncharitable is that the person's who would be aided a) don't really need it or b) don't deserve it (by whatever metric). We're hearing that now from MAGA. Their current lie is the billions of hale and hearty 25 year olds sitting in their mom's basement and playing video games. And yeah sure, sucking up quintillions of dollars in Medicaid assistance. Because healthy 25 year olds consume SO much medical care.
So why does MAGA flog that idiotic propaganda? To distract us from considering the millions of truly needy people who will be deprived of medical care. They will sicken and die. AND SO WILL THEIR CHILDREN. Jesus Christ, is MAGA so cruel that they're just fine with that?
And as far as "deserve" goes...if you're human, you deserve medical care. Period. And yes, I will gladly contribute, because I'm a human being and a member of society (MAGAs are neither).
