In IOWA democracy is a four letter word with Republicans

Record participation in the primary election has Republicans looking to stop that from ever happening again

The IOWA Secretary of state sent out ballots to all registered voters in the state of Iowa.   The result was a new record of voter participation - exceeding the previuous record by 25% or 150,000 people.

Instead of having to take a day off work and stand in line for 6 hours people could just mail in their vote.    What a concept!

And it scared the bejesus out of Repuiblicans who are crafting legislation to stop anything like this from ever happening again.      In their view its very likely those extra 150K people were  committing voter fraud - like kids ...or illegal immigrants...or sasquatch.       They have strong evidence of that too !    I mean, they cant show it to you or anything but they've got it.    You betcha!

The repugs are scared of voters.

This is part of an overall Republican strategy that has been very successful over the years--especially in 2016, not so much in 2018. Keep people from voting, by any means necessary, legal or illegal.

Trump, in one of his rare moments of lucid insight, observed that if everyone voted, no Republican would ever again be elected. Therefore, it is imperative for the Republican party's future that their efforts at voter suppression redouble. There are signs that that is exactly what they'll be concentrating their resources on during the coming months.

Iowa, like many Trumper states in the heartland, has a sane major city (Des Moines) surrounded by a bunch of rural Trumper counties populated by Clem Cornpone and Tucky Buckford. Knowing that the latter will safely vote Republican no matter what, state officials are concentrating on voter suppression in Des Moines and other small cities in Iowa. We'll see that pattern in other Trumper states.

Cheating is not a new concept

In my first post:

My bad.  Boilerman just gave you the evidence.   Solid !

For DemocRats, Cheating is the ONLY concept.

Exactly. trump perfected it over the years.

It might help the Republican Senate candidate and downstate candidates, but this will not affect the Presidential race. If Trump loses Iowa he will have already lost so many swing states that an Electoral College win will be out of reach.

Suppressing votes is the Republican way obviously. Since so many GOPers are dying out and being replaced by much better human beings, it's their only shot.

23 incidents of 'voter fraud' in 5 years.  Wow, gee, golly.

I voted absentee several times.   What's the big deal?

Now that we have early voting in my neck of the woods nobody has to take off work or stand in a line for hours.  Not even for very many minutes.   If ya should happen to wait until election night to vote, no problem, no lines to speak of.  Has Iowa never heard of early voting?  And as a bonus, would meet those lovely social distancing standards more easily.

And to delet someone from the rolls who hasn't voted in a year?  Gimme a break.

As I found out in my career, put too many 'conditions' in one request [of bill in this case] and you doom the whole thing.  But sounds like this needs dooming anyway.

Sincerely,

Hall Monitor

Real simple. Make it as easy as possible for people to vote. And that makes more sense than ever during a pandemic, which will certainly still be present come November.

Trump's idiot bleats about supposed voter fraud beg the question: why would anyone do it? Commit a felony for what...the chance to add one vote to thousands--or millions--of others? With no tangible reward or other incentive?

This is where Boiler or Stalker will tell us about the Deep State writing checks to illegal aliens so they can somehow fraudulently vote. But remember when Trump created that voter fraud investigation commission or whatever it was called? And it found SIXTEEN cases of fraudulent voting in the 2016 Presidential election--a wee bit short of the five million Trump wanted?

We in Oregon have had mail-in voting for some time. It's not even a point of contention here. In Trumper states, it's being choked off. The only argument being made is that when voting has to be done in person, turnout is lower, and that will favor Republicans. Really. That's the way they're saying it now--baldly, without remorse. They don't want Democrats to be able to vote.

I see no reason why voting can't be done on the internet, actually. Banks and other financial institutions already have dozens of protocols for identity protection and fraud prevention. Hell, I want to sign into my brokerage account, I need THREE passwords. No reason why that can't be done with voting. But corporate America is run by Republicans, and Republicans don't like voting (unless the "base" votes, of course).
