Interesting article on the shift in Canadian travel away from the US.

America Is Losing Canadian Visitors - Here's Where They're Going Instead - Travelbinger

"The U.S. tourism industry is projecting a $5.7 billion loss in 2025-26, “driven by a sustained, politically motivated boycott by Canadian travelers following trade tensions and tariffs."

"As Amir Eylon, President and CEO of Longwoods International, told Forbes: “Tourism boycotts do come up over one issue or another, but in my 37 years in the travel industry, I have never seen anything like what the Canadians have pulled off.”"

"Respondents’ top reasons for avoiding the country were a resolve to stand up for Canada, America’s current political climate, and concerns about heightened security at the border during Trump’s immigration crackdown."

"While America loses, other destinations are gaining enormously. Mexico has emerged as perhaps the single biggest beneficiary of Canada’s redirected travel spending. Mexico is seeing an unprecedented boom in Canadian tourism, with data published by the Mexico Secretary of Tourism showing an 11.8% spike in Canadian residents flying to the country in the first two months of 2025 from a year earlier."

"The Caribbean has joined Mexico in reaping a windfall. Skyscanner’s 2026 Canada Travel Trends Report confirms Saint Kitts up 170% and Saint Lucia up 160% in Canadian searches."

Trump pulled off the granddaddy of all unforced errors with this one, turning all of the US into flyover country; they fly over us to spend their money elsewhere.

with the hurricane in Jamacia I can see why St Lucia and St Kitts would be way up regardless.  Also would be interesting to see if the Mexico numbers continued after the first two months with the cartel violence.  I thought they were cruising much more

Maybe they cruised to St Lucia and St Kitts, that's 2 of the 6 islands I went to on my last cruise in February! I shared a Jeep in St Kitts with a Canadian couple on our excursion there.

I'll be in Mexico in December, happy to report any Canadian sightings.

Why be a Trump apologist? It shames you.

Trump has fucked over the US travel industry. That's incontrovertible.

The "cartel violence" in Mexico has been going on for decades and isn't any worse now. In fact, the cartel is and always has been very, very careful to not involve or harm American tourists, because of the shitstorm that would surely follow. The result is that an American tourist in Cabo or Mazatlan is roughly five times safer than an American resident in Houston or Miami. (Using violent crime stats.)

Those crime stats are probably correct.  But the news channels have been telling a different story as they often do.  Many saying don't go to mexico for spring break etc.  I am guessing there are travel warnings on the government websites as well.  I have been wanting to go to Mexico again, but the wife wants no part of it

Maybe you should explain to her that Mexican tourist destinations are heavily patrolled by both federal and local police, and the big bad boogeymen cartels stay the hell away. The few times I've been there, it seemed like there were cops everywhere. Which is a good thing, of course. And Mexico has the common sense to protect one of its most important sources of foreign exchange: tourist dollars.

Hell, when I lived in San Diego and took day trips to Tijuana (which often lasted past midnight), I felt safer there than I did in downtown San Diego. Plenty of police presence, and everybody polite and deferential because they wanted my gringo dollars.

And if your wife is swayed by economic concerns, explain to her how cheap it is to eat, drink, stay, and have a good time in Mexico with your favorable exchange $$$.

These seem like precautions any traveler should take anywhere. Same with the drownings. If you don't take elementary precautions, the presence of a lifeguard won't save you.

I would counter any warnings about Mexico with the observation that the chance of getting shot by an ICE agent is much lower in Mexico than the US.

Stats show 10 Americans died in gun violence in mass shooting the week Feb 23 to 28

zero people were killed by the cartel violence with stores and buses being cleared out before burning

does that make the violence ok ?

obviously no but I will take my chances in a tourist area in Mexico over US right now

as a matter of fact I was in Huatulco MX rage days the violence was occurring and not a issue

if not for social media or friends asking if ok we would not have known

Harvey, thanks for the info. I think we can see the difference between a country where guns are illegal and one where guns are worshipped.

Stumbled across this article, quoting some Canadians saying they will never travel to the US again.
