IT NEVER ENDS IN CALIFORNIA

“California drivers and Republican legislators are furious over a Democrat-led proposal that could see motorists taxed for each mile they drive. With the state staring down a budget deficit in the billions and more Californians switching to electric vehicles, Democratic lawmakers are searching for new ways to shore up declining gas tax revenue. Californians pay the second-highest gas price in the nation behind only Hawaii. In January, the average price was $4.23 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association.” On Thursday, state legislators advanced Democrat Lori Wilson’s bill, AB 1421, which would direct the California Transportation Commission and the state Transportation Agency to continue studying options for a mileage-based tax, rather than implementing one. Opponents of the proposal were out in force Saturday, with activists gathering at Cal Expo in Sacramento to collect signatures opposing a raft of new Democratic tax measures, including a potential mileage charge.

They keep talking about doing that here in Washington. Sounds like a ridiculous policy to me. I hope it doesn't pass.

The gasoline tax is what pays for roads in California.   THe problem is it falls (unfairly) solely on people who use gas combustion engines in their vehicles.   California leads the nation in people using EVs.    Currently the EV people dont contribute to the road construction because (Duh !) they dont buy gas.

The proposed law is to replace the gasoline tax with a mileage tax.    Seems sensible and more fair to me.  But its a free country.    David can have his blood pressure raised by anything he wants.   Bless his heart.

Do the proposals being considered have a way to distinguish between miles driven within the state and miles driven outside of the state?

I wonder if there's a better way to tax EVs. Maybe taxing charge stations or something? Or just tax electric vehicles per mile?

I would be a bit more open to it if they replaced gasoline taxes. The proposals I've seen for Washington State do not eliminate the gasoline tax they just add a separate tax per mile.

The gasoline tax is a mileage tax.    The more miles you drive the more gas you buy and the more tax you pay.

It just presumes we live in a world where everyone drives a gas combustion engine.   We dont.

And no - there is no distinguishing between mileage out of state.   But thats a good thing, isnt it?   If you take a road trip to Vegas all of your tax dollars spent on that mileage stays in your state.    Why would you want to give it to Nevada like you do with gas tax?

The mileage tax is in addition to the gas tax.

If Ca wanted to be fair the tax should be applicable to ev cars only.

Since 2014 cars have been equipped with a chip that can monitor driving habits & mileage. Insurance companies have access to it. Under the law the Ca (Big Brother) would have access to it.

If the mileage tax replaces the gas tax, which is the plan, and is not in addition to it, I'm all for it.  The drivers in California aren't upset, it's the EV drivers because they don't pay the gas tax.  This way everyone pays something, and if drops the price of gas as well, awesome.
