Well, in point of fact, from 1936 to 1939, we had several prominent corporate "ambassadors" from Germany as well as a fervently pro-Nazi AMERICAN political organization. These "influencers" and their economic/political clout were a major reason (along with good old anti-Semitism) why we never offered asylum/refuge to more than a handful of European Jews. See the story of the "Bremen" and its doomed passengers if you want to know how horribly noble America behaved.

So unfortunately, money still talks and when coupled with intrigue/espionage/"influencing," it shouts.
