Article 1 of the Constitution says DC can't become a state.
I agree.
Not only do I think it's unconstitutional but would be a horrible idea.
The federal government should not have its own Representatives or Senators in Congress.
It would give the federal government even more power and has now.

Democrats want to stack the Supreme Court in their favor, eliminate the Electoral college and make DC a state
So are you outraged that the Supreme Court is currently "stacked" 6-3? Or does that not twist your panties because it's stacked in your gang's favor?
DC citizens don't get proper representation. DC, as a state, would be larger than three other states population-wise. The Republipigs oppose it because it would be a blue state. You wouldn't yeep about it if it would be a red state.
The Electoral College elects Presidents who have lost the popular vote. Once again, you only like that because without that, no Republipig would ever get elected.
Stupid, hypocritical Tom.

It would take this thingy called a Constitutional amendment. Remember your three years in fourth grade, when you were taught about that?

That wouldn't be the federal government obtaining Representatives or Senators; it would be the PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE obtaining such representation.
Do you think it's fair that those people don't have any representation in either chamber?
I'm a bit stunned that you would think that DC statehood would result in the federal government having House and Senate seats.
The horrible fear that the Republipigs have is that it would result in two more permanently blue Senate seats. It's the same reason they've always blocked Puerto Rico statehood, for which by the way,, the same rationale applies: four million US citizens without Congressional representation. That's undemocratic.

You're right. It wouldn't technically be the federal government having the seats.
Just something about the nation's capital having representation in congress just doesn't sit right. I would prefer that DC has no citizens and just federal buildings.
Perhaps a compromise could be to create a new state from all the land in DC that does not currently have federal buildings.
Or maybe they should just give the land that doesn't have federal buildings back to Maryland.
I would support statehood for Puerto Rico IF the people of Puerto Rico voted for it.
But until they are a State I do not feel they should have representation in Congress. Same for St Thomas, Guam, American Samoa etc

Have you been to DC? Maybe 1/8 of it is government buildings, monuments, etc. The rest is just another big East Coast city, complete with suburbs, etc.
The state of DC could exclude the federal buildings, and that area would and should remain under federal control. The remainder would be a heavily urban small state.
The idea of ceding the non-government land back to MD or VA has been floated and screamed at by Republicans. Why? That would tilt MD or VA irrevocably blue.
Republicans generally want fewer voters, not more, so any additions to the roster of states are DOA.
BTW Puerto Rico has voted for statehood in several referenda. In fact, it's kind of a ritual for a Democrat to open a session of Congress by proposing a PR statehood bill. Republicans always block it, of course, and since it would need a supermajority, it'll never pass.

Virginia got all of its land back already. Something similar could be done with Maryland.
Congress could retrocede any land in the district not needed for Federal purposes back to Maryland without having to amend the Constitution.
Giving the District itself Statehood or otherwise giving them representation in Congress would require a constitutional amendment.

But again, even that would certainly add a blue House seat to MD and skew its Senate seats and gubernatorial elections in that direction as well. The Republicans would rather nuke the city than see that happen.
