Whatever the magnitude of the so-called "border crisis" may actually be, conservitard screaming about the TRILLIUNZ AND TRILLIUNZ of illegals "flooding" across the border to TAKE ALL OUR JOBZ and RAPE OUR WIMMENFOLK and OPEN UP TACO TRUCKS EVERYWHERE doesn't help.

The physical border wall, even if completed, wouldn't do much to solve the "crisis," because most illegal aliens either got there legally (and became "illegal" when they overstayed their visas) or crossed in ways besides walking. And it wouldn't be an impenetrable obstacle if finished; not by a long shot, not when it can be defeated by an extension ladder or a rope with a grappling hook. So we'd need to set up guard towers with machine guns, sow minefields, etc.

Of course, all this white-boy fear of those brown AYLIUNS is the same old "they're going to replace us" nonsense. Here's the open secret: we actually WANT these people here. They contribute to the economy in myriad ways. They earn wages and pay taxes---without ever being eligible for the social benefits those taxes are supposed to provide. For instance, Social Security will very soon (within the year) have a negative net cash flow. Did you know that without contributions from wage-earning illegal aliens, that would have already happened back in 2019?

And let's not forget that these people come here to do the shit jobs that true-blue Americans can't be persuaded to do. The price of almost everything you buy is lower because someone is willing to work for $8.50 an hour to provide it. You don't like that woman from Nicaraugua making up your hotel room? Fine, let's fire her and chase her out of the country--and you'll pay five bucks more next time.

All this is logic, of course, and has no effect whatsoever on white-boy race hatred and fear. Plus, many, many right-wing politicians, including the Orange Pusbag himself, make and have made political hay by demonizing Hispanic immigrants.

Do you seriously think that even if we put up a thousand-foot high electrified fence along the entire length of the border and manned it with machine gun towers every hundred feet, that would reduce the influx of fentanyl by even one percent? Do you really think that the drug arrives here in backpacks carried by illegal aliens?

I take any "news" source from the heart of conservative land with a large grain of salt, and this link was to an afternoon talk show opinion piece, not actual news. However, taking it at face value, let's assume that it's correct--fentanyl overdoses overtook suicide as the leading cause of death for ages 18-45 in 2021. What happened in 2020 and 2021? Think hard, boys and girls!

Isolation, depression, and uncertainty lead to drug overdoses and deaths. Those things have been more prevalent in the last couple of years than almost any time in the past. That's why there have been more overdoses. But if you want to blame the problem on "all those illegals flooding across the border," I'd like to point out that border crossings, both legal and illegal, slowed to a relative trickle in 2020-2021. So, using data analysis, we can conclude that all the drug overdoses have been due to a lack of migrants crossing the border.

I've always been amazed by how few people are able to understand the basic analytic concept, "Correlation does not equal causation."
