I was planning to participate in the Portland protests today, but on second thought, I decided to drive down to Eugene instead. Turned out to be a good move. I got there about 10 o'clock and the crowds were out in full force. There were three separate protests at different locations--that I saw, there were probably more, and certainly, one big one on the University of Oregon campus, which I wanted to see but couldn't get within half a mile of, due to the crowds.
I asked a police officer what the total crowd size was, and he shrugged and said, at least fifteen thousand, but probably more. Every street downtown was jammed.
The atmosphere was more party than protest, more fun than anger. There were a lot of signs, of course, but also a lot of inflatable this and that--plenty of Trump balloons and such, but also dinosaurs, pumpkins, and other oddities. My favorite signs:
NO TURDS
and
NO KINGS NO RAPISTS NO CROOKS NO LIARS NO TRAITORS
(with a portrait of Trump yelling at somebody)
I saw no counter-protestors. In other cities across the US, MAGA terrorists have pointed guns at the protestors, driven their pickup trucks into crowds, and attacked marchers and tried to take their signs. I sincerely hope that no one was hurt today due to ugly MAGA violence. Eugene... everything's cool so far.
This was a great experience. I love this city, for its beauty, its culture (a college town on steroids), and above all, its tolerant atmosphere. In fact, it's been voted the most tolerant LGBTQ+ city in the US multiple times
And yes oh yes oh yes, Eugene is very liberal. What's the consequent vibe? Everyone is really, really nice. I've never been anywhere so welcoming; I've never seen so many instances of people helping and being kind to one another. The MAGAs who infest this forum should visit and find out what it's like to be in a city where everyone isn't an asshole
(Cue ignorant, nasty comments from Millerscum et al.)
