Does that mean the next Democratic President can simply declare the healthcare system a national emergency and setup Medicare for all?
Does that mean the next Democratic President can simply declare the healthcare system a national emergency and setup Medicare for all?
Couple of differences.
Building the wall is a law that Congress passed & supported by pelosi/schumer/obama. VA care for all has not been passed by Congress.
The cost is less thn $6 billion, an emergency declaration for VA care for all would also require the doubling of taxes.
The American institution is designed to have appropriation funds be created and approved by Congress.
But as we've learned there's loopholes for everything ... Trump has shown you get around all kinds of ethics practices and insitutional guidelines. This is just the latest example.
We've also learned:
-A president can have a private business enterprise that receives undisclosed amounts of dark money from foreign entities and special interest groups.
- A president can give security clearance to his son-in-law even after he fails the security clearance background checks.
- A president can have closed door meetings with Foreign autocrats without any of his staff present...and ripping up the notes of his translator thereaftor.
- A president can fire an FBI director on the basis of that director investigating him..even saying as much
- A president can intimidate a witness and his family before they give testimony to Congress
- A president can declare the free press of the UNites States as "the enemy of the people"
- A president can steal babies away from their mothers at the US Border as a tool of deterance from more mothers and babies showing up.
- A president can demand his Attorney General give loyalty to the president himself over the country at large...even in cases where this presents a massive conflict of interest.
- A president can openly declare he received his list of Supreme Court candidates from a special interest group that already pre-vetted them upon their political agenda.....also in the context of that special interest group dumping money into the president private business enterprise.
This is a partial list.
So, in summary, is anyone surprised that the president is circumventing the instituional norms in this latest case?
Oh..and lets take note of the unsurprising but noteworthy hypocrisy of his base on this topic.
3 years ago tea-partiers were completely aghast at the massive abuse of power Obama oversaw by issuing "unconstitutional" executive orders. FOX NEWS was sooooo upset about the whole thing.
But now its ok for the president to declate a national emergency just to get cash for his pet projects.
Like I said - not surprising but noteworthy.
