That being said even if they had a nuclear bomb they do not have a delivery device capable of reaching the US.
If I felt it was time for military action then I would ask Congress to declare war. There's been plenty of time to do so.
But more importantly the thing I wouldn't do is stage a coup in the 1950s causing 3/4 of a century worth of bow back and counting.
Do you really believe that Iran wants to commit suicide? Because that's what a nuclear attack against anyone would be. If they attacked any NATO state with a nuclear weapon they would be eliminated. Heck I can't think of a single country that Iran could attack with nuclear device that wouldn't result in Iran being eliminated.

I've heard that Iran is 2 weeks from having a nuke every year since the 1980s. It's all to feed the MIC, they love taxpayer dollars to destroy places then rebuild them, making fat profits.
They have missiles and drones and any of them could be in a container ship launched off San Diego or other places within miles of shore.
More likely are attacks by thousands of refugees and embedded fighters from the Middle East and South America already here in the US. When/if that happens, expect infrastructure hits to the power grid and water facilities and outright suicide bombers in public areas.
If a violent country is a threat particularly a nuclear threat; yes we can launch a preemptive attack.
The nuclear program was destroyed but it was being restarted.
iran was warner not to try to restart the program

Perhaps military intervention with Iran was the right decision. If that is the case there was plenty of time to declare war. This has been going on for decades.
