I like the photo--I can't track it down right now, but I think it was from the Helsinki summit--that shows Putin looking sideways at the Orange Pusbag and giving him a biiiiig cat-ate-the-canary smile. That smile said, "I own this clown." Which certainly proved to be the case.
Trump shamed and downgraded America's image in the eyes of the world. Putin decided that since we were stupid enough to elect and support the Orange Pusbag, we wouldn't have the resolve to oppose his invasion of Ukraine. He saw the RepubliQ attack and oppose Biden on every single issue, large and small, and thought that they would similarly sabotage any efforts Biden might make to help Ukraine. That has happened, but not nearly to the extent that Putin thought it would.
I do wonder why the RepubliQ is on the side of moral decency this time. They must realize that it helps Biden. They've been willing to hurt their own country and constituents to further their political ends, so why haven't they thrown Ukraine under the bus?

Putin was waiting to see if Trump won in 2020. If that had happened, he would have waltzed right in to Ukraine, with no opposition from the US. Since then, Putin waited to see how divided and indecisive we would be. The traitorous RepubliQ told Putin they would oppose anything Biden tried to do, so, after seeing a year-plus of them fighting Biden, Putin gave the invasion the green light.
It's the RepubliQ who made Putin think our response would be Trump-weak. They didn't care--and still don't--what happens to Ukraine. But what Putin didn't anticipate is that the RepubliQ would pivot away from opposing Biden in order to make political hay. I can see why Putin was surprised. The RepubliQ have made it their mission to stop anything whatsoever Biden wants to do--just like they did with Obama. So them actually aligning with Biden on Ukraine is very strange. As is the RepubliQ coming down on the side of moral decency for once.
