Nevada Shut Down

Well, as of midnight, Governor Sisolak ordered casinos shut down.  Gyms are closed, salons, buffets, etc.  I can't imagine how this will effect all the people who had a vacation planned.

There are worse things than having to change your vacation plans. Besides, canceling a Vegas trip is like winning a couple thousand bucks. You won't be spending a couple of paychecks feeding the slots, paying resort fees, etc. etc. I wouldn't imagine that it was much fun in the casinos anyway right now.

I hope that all the casino companies, with their mountains of plundered cash, continue to pay their employees through this crisis. All that 6:5 blackjack and all those parking fees (etc.) have given them a pretty nice stash.

MGM is extending health insurance coverage through June 30 for employees "impacted by layoffs and furloughs."  That isn't a great long time, but better than a sudden cut off.   They should get their colonoscopy/mammogram/prescription refills now!

No city lives and dies with the national economy like Vegas.      Its one-dimensional economy  is the epitome of discretionary spending

The only silver lining is people looking to buy a home there will likely see some big real estate drops in the coming months which is long overdue.    Vegas real estate was in a bubble.   $400k for 1200 sqft homes....in the desert.    Give me a break.

Well, the casinos produce nothing---no tangible goods. Basically, a casino is an air-conditioned building where you walk inside, there's a guy standing behind a table, you hand him $10, and he gives you back $9. You are welcome to repeat that transaction until you get bored and walk away, or you run out of money.

So most rational people will put that experience at or near the bottom of their to-do lists when times are tough.

You're probably right about real estate prices. You live in Vegas, there's a roughly six-month period when you stick your head out the front door and you think, "Why, again, do I live in this hellhole?" If the standard answers of "There are lots of places where I can go to throw away money" and "This is the only place where a schmuck with essentially no skill set can make a decent living" no longer apply, then we'll see a mass exodus.

Kevin --To each their own. Where one decides to live is their own business. If one, such as yourself, has a problem with what Vegas has to offer, then you should consider what and where makes you happy and reside there. May I suggest, you should consider living where everyone complains and bitches about any and everything - there you most assuredly would fit in and would be with those of your ilk.

I already reside in a place that's about as different from Vegas as it gets. I never said anyone else should or shouldn't live there if that's what they want. My point was that if you remove the gambling and the jobs, there's a lot less reason to live there--so real estate prices will fall.

I know I don't want to live among people like you, who does nothing but say nasty shit and attack people. Really, why don't you give it a rest for a while? You're just adding to the friction and the tension. You're doing no good whatsoever. People are stressed and don't want to hear you yell.

Really, I mean it. Don't respond to this with yet another stupid fucking insult. Take a moment and think seriously about your manner and demeanor. Don't bother attacking me or anyone else--we've already heard a diarrheal flood of that from you. Dial it back, be a decent human being, if only for a little while, stop with the politicizing of the current crisis, stop the partisan bullshit, and who knows? You might be able to engage in an actual discussion, if you so choose.

(Note to everyone: This is almost certainly a futile effort, but I thought I'd try talking to him as a human being. Worth a try...maybe.)

Do everyone a favor - take some of your own advice. You have a lot of gall accusing me of being just like you.

Well, you can't say I didn't try to bring it back into the realm of decent people.

And when did I say it was just like me? It's about as far an opposite of me as it can get.

It will go on screaming childish insults and ruining these discussions until it croaks.

I'd like to see that happen nationwide--but of course, it isn't going to. (I don't mean just casinos, obviously.)

Imagine if we had that terrible, terrible, society-destroying socialist universal health care! Then whether you were presently working or not wouldn't enter into it.

I am hoping that one positive that comes out of this is that the nation sees why we need universal health care, no ifs, ands, or buts. It can be framed as, it's in your own interests that everyone receives care regardless of personal circumstances. For one thing, it slows down the spread of pandemics.
