New York Wakes Up Under Socialism after Mamdani Sworn In

This will not go well. I actually feel sorry for the sane people residing in New York City.  -- Socialist Democrat Zohran Mamdani formally took control of New York City just after midnight Thursday, becoming the first Muslim to lead the nation’s largest city after swearing the oath of office on the Quran during a tightly controlled private ceremony beneath Lower Manhattan.

What's wrong with socialism?

I challenge you to give a serious, thoughtful answer that is devoid of insults or gratuitous political generalities.

What's wrong with socialism?

It has never worked

Day 1 om mami land.  He held a "street party" and there were no bathrooms, food or entertainment.

From The Hill.  Expect to be disappointed as socialists may talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

Fittingly, some participants at Mamdani’s inauguration complained that it lacked any food, music, or bathrooms. On a cold, miserable Friday, the new budding socialists had to stand outdoors and imagine the “warmth of collectivism” coming in the new utopia known as New York.

Around 10,000 supporters stood outside City Hall during the event — billed as an “Inauguration for a New Era Block Party” by Mamdani’s staff — crammed into several barricaded pens without access to bathrooms or any food concession stands.

“It’s definitely not a block party,” said Danny Mahabir, 30, an Astoria resident who told The Post he’d been expecting a mix of food and music at the New Year’s Day festivities. Instead, Mahabir, who wore three layers of clothes to stay warm, said he and others are “just stuck behind the barricades watching it on TV.”

“It’s not exactly what I was expecting,” said Brooklyn resident Shane Turner, 30. “I was expecting food and music.”

“I could’ve watched this from home,” added a 25-year-old Queens woman, who declined to give her name

He expected 40,000

Works pretty damn good in Europe where studies have consistently shown people are happier in those countries than those with a more capitalistic bent.

False as the Nordic countries are more capitalist.  France's GDP is 1.2% and they go on strike on a regular basis stifling the economic activity.

England is 1.1%, Germany is barely 1%, Italy and Austria is under 1%

Countries with a socialist socioeconomic system are among the richest per capita, consistently poll the highest in terms of happiness, and have high life expectancy.

I think china, Cuba, Venezuela N Korea to name few would beg to differ. Eastern Europe and Russia collapsed under socialism/communism

There's no such governmental system as "socialism/communism." Eastern Europe and Russia were never socialist or communist. They were fascist dictatorships that called themselves communists. Russia put "Socialist" in its official name but never actually practiced socialism.

And considering that Russia's government lasted 72 years, that was a mighty slow "collapse."

That's also true for the other countries you bleated about: they're dictatorships. China does practice a mixture of socialism and capitalism and they are undoubtedly successful. The average citizen has a job, housing, and enough to eat. That had never happened in five thousand years.

Stupid Tom. I knew you couldn't answer my question. What's wrong with socialism?

To properly have this discussion we should probably first decide on which definition of socialism we are using.

Socialism - Government structure with a Command Economy where private property generally outlawed and the means of production are held by The State.

Capitalism - Government structure with a Demand Economy and certain property rights where the means of production are in private hands.

There seems to be a new definition of socialism that just refers to strong social safety nets and other social programs.

The "new" definition is one that I am still getting used to. I have been coming to a realization that often when people mention the word socialism this is what they're talking about. It has caused a lot of confusion during debate.

Many will point to Scandinavian countries as an example. But I would not describe those countries as socialist. I would describe them as capitalist with a strong social safety net.

I believe there is plenty of room within capitalism to provide reasonable social safety nets and reasonable social programs.

We are seeing in MN the results of social safety nets as billions disappear.

This is the type of government the DSA and the idiot in seattle and mamdani want

Zohran Mamdani, during a 2021 speech at the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) conference, articulated his vision for socialism, emphasizing the need to "continue to elect more socialists" and to be "unapologetic about our socialism." He identified the seizure of the means of production as a fundamental goal of his political agenda, which aligns with Marxist principles where the working class takes control of the tools and resources used to produce goods and services

NYC just passed the COPA Act.

Under the bill, owners of covered properties would have to notify the city and a list of pre-qualified nonprofit buyers before they formally list a building. Those groups would then have a short window, about 45 days, to signal interest and put together an offer before the property hits the open market.

In reality the prequalified list would be limited to preferred organizations of city council members.  Their ability to be a landlord would be irrelevant.

More social failures.  NYC has failed as a landlord and.presently has almost 178,000 aprtments most in need of major repairs .

Repairs and Maintenance: The agency has a capital need of $80 billion, with nearly 610,000 open work orders.

While the number of empty units has ballooned, the time it takes to turn around a vacant apartment has improved. Two years ago, it took 412 days. Today, it takes 352 days. That's a 15% improvement.

Corruption and Oversight: High-profile bribery and extortion charges against NYCHA employees highlight the need for proper oversight mechanisms. 1
