New York Wakes Up Under Socialism after Mamdani Sworn In

It seems like a hardship to force low income people to go out and buy a couple new trash cans.  And how do you get them home on the subway ?  How do you get rid of the old ones ? Is there a recycle plan ?  In our city both the city and private venders fee for using the city trash containers are included in the weekly trash service.  Sounds like NYC is probably getting a kickback.  Also they are creating a black market for trash containers since the city will not know if the were purchased or stolen

It is similar in my area. The garbage company provides the proper size cans. You get a reasonable number of free replacements if the can breaks or goes missing.

Technically one could go out and buy their own cans that fit the requirements but there isn't much reason to do so.

I could be mistaken but it was my understanding that the city is requiring people to purchase the can from the city or from a limited number of retailers.

At least that is the type of policy to which my comments were refering.

I wouldn't describe a supply shortage brought on by the government mandating a monopoly distributor as a failure of capitalism.

Also I never used the word socialist to describe the policy. I called it bad government policy. And my name isn't Tommy.

Not sure if you thought you quoted another post or if that was supposed to be some kind of insult.

All I did was say it sounded like bad policy and said it would be better if cans were provided by the trash collector or by multiple vendors.

Referring to Tom's bleat about NYC's trash can policy spotlighting the horrors of SOOOOOOCIALISM. He used it to illustrate his point that NYC will soon be consumed by flames and leveled by earthquakes as divine punishment for them having elected a SOOOOOCIALIST mayor.

I do mildly disagree with the term "money grab,":as it implies that the city has enacted this policy in order to enrich itself. I don't see any evidence that that is the case. What money will the city receive from the trash can purchases?

I suspect that the trash can standardization was a consequence of unions' pressure to make sanitation workers' jobs easier and less dangerous. Unions have immense clout in NYC. I'm not interested enough to check that out.

I apologize for not stating more clearly that I was refuting and schooling Tom, not you.

I'd buy one if Trump's face was lining the bottom. I'd make sure to put the used cat litter in there first.

Exactly....it's the same here in Riverside.  The city provides the bins.  They stay at the property, so if you move, the bins are there for the next owner.  If they don't want the service, the city comes by and picks up the bins.  They also replace any damaged bins.

Not sure how it happened, but a neighbor's green waste bin had half the lid ripped off.  She called the city to let them know and they had a new bin to her in a couple of days.
