The next round of Venezuela checks

https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-house-considers-more-coronavirus-164653640.html

Informal discussions have begun.    Democrats want 2k to everyone making under $120,000 a year.    The WHite House wants payroll tax cuts.

How about this?  Instead of giving money to people who dont need it (people who are still employed or retired)  maybe focus on the people who do need it.   The unemployed.

That won't matter as much as it should. No matter what the Feds slather on, UI benefit eligibility is still determined by the states. And in Trumper states, 3/4 of the unemployed (on average) will not qualify for benefits.

It's stupidly upside-down. UI benefits are usually fairly small, but it's the federal $600/week addition that really matters. So you can't get the $600 unless your state says you can have the $110 or whatever.

In Trumper states, this is a consequence of the unending conservative narrative that unemployment insurance keeps people from working.

I agree with Kevin UI would be the wrong way to go for the reasons he mentioned plus a few other considerations.

1.  If you wondered why hairdressers, massage therapists, and tattoo artists were among the first to go back to work despite healthcare experts saying they should be among the last, it was so the various states could get them off the unemployment rolls. Even if some of these folks are living in MAGA states among the hedonistic conservatives, these types of independent, solo businesses and 1099 workers aren't making half of what they did before.

2.  A lot of essential workers never quit working. Should they be punished for risking their lives to keep your pantry stocked?  I work for a non-profit so it doesn't pay much. If the government gives every unemployed person 2k per-month you can bet your damn ass I am going to become an unemployed person.
