The reality is a bit more nuanced. You have to consider that three slave states remained in the Union; Lincoln's stated goal as late as 1862 was NOT to eliminate slavery; and the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to conquered Confederate territory.
The war was started because the goober states were afraid that Lincoln would abolish slavery, which, ironically, he wouldn't have been able to do (in 1865) if they had remained in the Union.
So the real cause of the war was Southern goober stupidity.
Up until just a few years ago, a statement like this would have been a career-ender in either political party.
Since Haley is considered one of their "moderates," this just shows how radical and UNconservative the GOP has become.
She has no chance of beating the Orange Turd anyway, so all this is just a political theater sideshow. Let's face it, all we're going to get is more of the Turd senselssly babbling, and our Shortbus Gang telling us how wise, wonderful, and spiritually pure he is.

Given that state's general political makeup, it's possible that the RepubliQ there are a little less MAGA than the general herd. Let's see how she does in Arkansas and other deep-red shitholes.

Boiler, I had this same debate several years ago with Don Deigo. I posted links to each confederate state's article of sucession. They all cited slavery and things like infeority the negro race as the reason for their treason.
