Much of their leadership may be living in federal facilities soon. They were stealing from the rubes big time.
Of course they are and always have been a criminal organization, but they'll always have three things going for them:
1) Gun love. It's fetishistic and sexual in America, and the NRA is still seen as its defender.
2) They've got the yahoos thoroughly convinced that ANY gun control laws, even the mildest of measures, are an attempt by the Deep State to TAKES AWAY ARE PRESHUS SECOND AMENDMENT FREEDUMBS.
3) They have further convinced those yahoos that the NRA is the sole bulwark and defender against all them LIBURRULS who WANTS TO TAKES AWAY YORE GUNZ.
It's like the Catholic Church. There will always be believers, and the collection plates will always be full.

Hey, in America, we glorify successful criminal enterprises. Look at all those Mafia movies over the years! And of course, look at how many (idiots) admire the Bigly Orange Successful Genius Businessman (never mind that his business empire has been a money-burning shell game for three decades).
LaPierre must be constantly chuckling to himself as he spends all the money the rubes give him.
