Less in an absolute numerical sense, but the same in terms of the cost of a college education relative to the average person's income. College was no less expensive then than it is now.
But let's not pretend that the sole value of a college education to society is that the recipient can produce greater economic output. A more educated citizenry makes for a better society overall. For example, educated people don't vote Trump.
