I am not a real big believer in anecdotal evidence. I saw a study not too long ago that showed middle-class Canadians typically pay less in taxes than middle-class Americans.

As I said in another recent post it is a matter of priorities. For me personally, I'd cut the defense budget in half. I'd raise income taxes back to what they were under the great tax cutter Ronald Reagan. I'd add a finical transaction tax as touted by Bernie Sanders. Universal single payer would cost the government less than it pays for our current system study after study shows, so that would actually add to my pot to spend on other things.
As always the liberals reflex is to cut defense, which is in in the constitution as compared to free health care, which isn't. By cutting defense by half we will no longer be able to maintain a 2 ocean navy with enough carrier fleets. Divisions will be reduced as well as training while the Russians & Chinese ramp theirs up.
A significant tax increase would result it in a recession as the consumer will have less money to spend.

Obamacare does cost the government less than what we had before but it cost more than a full-blown single payer with universal coverage. Those aren't just theories that is what the CBO says. One of the big reasons Republicans had such a difficult time repealing and replacing Obamacare was that what they were purposing to replace it with cost a lot more than Obamacare even though it covered far fewer people.

The typo is the result of me dictating a reply on my phone rather than typing on my computer. It is a financial transaction tax. We had one in this country up until 1966. A lot of first world countries have them. Generally, the way they work around the world is by imposing a small tax every time you buy or sell a stock or bond. I think the Sanders proposal called for a .5% (half a percent) tax upon the sale of stock.
The "welfare" mentioned in the constitution is not the "welfare" we have today. Two totally different definitions of the same word. You should be ashamed - and have to write 500 times on the blackboard " I am a liar and twist the meaning of words to make them fit my ignorant liberal agenda".
I see that Doc is trying out his contortionist act again. Back then general welfare meant to promote the health and general well-being of the population. Healthcare, food stamps, jobs programs, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security would all fall under promoting the general welfare.
If the definition were as you say, then providing for the common defense would limit the government to providing flintlock rifles and bayonets to the Army and wooden ships to the Navy because in 1789 that is what providing for the common defense meant. Doc, I will leave to you to call the Air Force and let them know they have to shut down because the founding fathers couldn't fathom flying machines or their use in the defense of the government back when they wrote the Constitution.
