Democrats don't love Elon. He is a younger version of Trump a narcissistic, thin skinned individual with multiple personality disorders. And they both abuse prescription stimulants (amphetamine salts) and think they are exempt from following any Federal or State law.
Trump is threatening to block Musk's First Amendment rights with retaliation from the US government if he supports Democratic candidates.

Trump's plan, such as it was, was to accept Elon's big bag of money and then, if he won the election, to give him some sort of important-sounding sinecure, serene in his ongoing belief that he could nullify anything Elon might do by imperial decree, er, executive order. But Elon got too big for his britches.
Elon's just another poor sap who is experiencing buyer's remorse. For his quarter billion, he got to strut around acting important for a few months--and his business has tanked. Not a very good ROI.
