Reno / Sparks / Tahoe resort info

I didn't know where else to enter this inquiry within the forums so will give it a rip here. Would like to hear input from those who have stayed / played in these areas. Contrast Circus Circus, ElDorado, Silver Legacy hotels and/ or alternate casinos in Reno / Sparks, for example. Plus any experiences at Caesars Republic or Harrahs in Lake Tahoe. We've got CET comps including air packages and all those mentioned are included. We just don't have any experience whatsoever with these locations and have decided that our next trip will be in the northern NV direction. A bit weary of the Vegas gouge, etc.

Reno is my primary gambling destination and has been for the last 10+ years, ever since Vegas started circling the drain.

Reno is overall much less expensive than Vegas, and the gambling is better. The CET "Row" downtown and the Tahoe casinos are not great, succumbing themselves to Gouge-a-rama, but there are lots of other options. Like Vegas, Reno has a number of "locals'" casinos that offer better value than the big corporate joints.

Well, we're interested in any of the options that offer some sort of proverbial "value" / player consideration.. We can stay at CET props and eat / gamble elsewhere as we do in Vegas. Any particulars?

The best two Reno casinos are the Peppermill and Atlantis. They're both on the south side of town (not within walking distance of downtown, but an easy bus ride), near each other. They compete fiercely for the locals' market.

The Sparks casinos, the Nugget and MGM, are kind of meh and tired. The Nugget does offer good deals on occasion; the MGM never does. Western Village is a good place to stay and eat and has the best VP in town--but a truly horrible players' club. The new casino in a shopping center in Sparks--i forget its name, Treasure Bay or something--is worthless.

It seems like you're going to be forced to pick a CET property, so let me detail those. Circus Circus is almost exactly like its Vegas namesake: old, shoddy, filled with kids, and everything is the color of Pepto Bismol. The Eldorado is nicer and has some great food options. Their Tivoli Gardens coffee shop and bakery is great. Silver Legacy is the best of the three. The latter two have surprisingly good VP and the expectedly feeble players' club.

If I was planning a stay downtown, Silver Legacy would be my hands-down choice. I would not stay at Clown Clown at gunpoint.

If you decide on Tahoe--well, you should know that the gambling sucks there: Vegas Strip-style shitty games and high limits. Crap VP, and a slot return much lower than Reno. Yecch! BUT...if I found myself in Tahoe, I'd consider it a sin anyway to spend five minutes gambling. It's SO beautiful there, so much to see and do. The casinos offer nothing--not even good dining. (South Lake Tahoe, just across the state line, is the place for that.)

If you weren't shackled to CET and wanted to stay and play in Reno, I'd recommend the Peppermill. NICE rooms, good food, and pretty good gambling. Next on the list would be Atlantis.

Note that both Peppermill and Atlantis give you essentially nothing for VP play. My last visit, I ran $10K through at the Peppermill and earned ONE players' club point. One. Both casinos insist you bleed your club account dry before you can use any comps they might offer.

So to sum up, if you have CET comps, stay in Reno at the Eldorado or Silver Legacy. Then go to Tahoe, stay at any one of the CET properties there--there really isn't any difference --and give them as little action as you feel you can get away with. Spend your time instead exploring this fantastic area. The drive around the lake is magnificent.

By the way, you'll want to rent a car for the duration. There really isn't much choice--transit options are poor. You should budget one whole day for the trip from Reno to Tahoe. The nicest trip is to go up to Virginia City first and spend a couple of hours there. Then take Hey 431 up and over past Mt. Rose to Tahoe. Absolutely stunning views.

Like in Vegas, the locals' casinos are the play. They're all on the fringe of the Reno city core. Smaller joints, not fancy but with good low-limit games and lots of great food for relatively cheap.

Tamarack has a few good games and the occasional great promo.

Rail City, ditto. Good eats.

Baldini's has the best coffee shop in town--games are meh.

Gold Dust West has not-great games but the best promos in town. A really good Senior Day.

Avoid Boomtown.

Bonanza had a brief spasm of really good VP but killed it. Still a very good coffee shop.

The aforementioned Western Village has lots of multi line NSUD for low denoms and a Peppermill-style coffee shop with good daily specials. (The entire casino is basically a clone of the Peppermill.)

Cal-Neva, while ostensibly downtown, caters to locals. Its hotel is an embarrassing afterthought and its once-fabled coffee shop has declined from a 10/10 to an 0.5/10. The gambling semi-sucks, but there is still low-limit BJ and the slots pay better than elsewhere. BUT--it's revamping itself somewhat. Might be worth popping your head in the door. Very close, if you're staying on The Row.

Let me know if there are any non-casino dining options you'd be interested in. Unlike Vegas, Reno is an actual city with an existence that doesn't revolve around the casinos. Also, there's actually stuff to see and do.

I'm afraid I don't have current enough info on who offers the best comps, deals, and such, as that's really, really fluid. I would suggest you do a tour, join all the players' clubs, run a hundy through a machine at each place, and see what arrives in the mail. In the past, I've gotten some great offers for minimal play.

What time of year are you intending to visit?

I stayed at a non-Casino property called "The Plaza" - no relation to the place of the same name in Vegas.

Weekly nights are low 100's.   Its right next door to the downtown Casesers properties and sits on the river walk.

Rooms come with seperate living room area in a really old school - antiquey vibe.     Indoor pool.   Onsite lounge.   Parking garage.

I'd recommend it.

Sierra Grand Casino has been the most generous with comps and mail offers for my low range play.

I gave them the least amount of my play and they gave me the best mail offers and comps  =)    Peppermill and Atlantis didnt give me squat.     There's a really fun slot house called Baldini's which has a free steak dinner for new players with minimum play.  Slots there are as loose as any place I've ever played.

Reno has a pretty cool car museum. I would recommend checking it out if you are into that sort of thing. The river walk is pretty nice too.

OK. Thanks for all the input Kevin, PJ, and LiveFreeNW. No question we'll be renting a car so we can explore options. We'll be visiting in May/June 2026. We'll be staying at a Caesars property because of 'free' rooms, FP, air, and some dining comps ( too many perks to avoid it; but that doesn't mean we'll spend much time/funds gambling there. We're well aware of their rep in Vegas, etc). Ultimately it'd be good to discover the most consistent player friendly options ( house edge, paytables, promos, return comp offers, and reasonable dining options). We'll test the waters. Thanks again.
