Reno / Sparks / Tahoe resort info

OK. Thanks for all the input Kevin, PJ, and LiveFreeNW. No question we'll be renting a car so we can explore options. We'll be visiting in May/June 2026. We'll be staying at a Caesars property because of 'free' rooms, FP, air, and some dining comps ( too many perks to avoid it; but that doesn't mean we'll spend much time/funds gambling there. We're well aware of their rep in Vegas, etc). Ultimately it'd be good to discover the most consistent player friendly options ( house edge, paytables, promos, return comp offers, and reasonable dining options). We'll test the waters. Thanks again.

It's kind of a mixed bag, in that Peppermill and Atlantis have the best gambling but the worst players' club and the stingiest comps. The best places to dine are the locals' casinos I mentioned, and the games they offer and the comps and promos they provide are all over the map.

It looks like, given the critically low snowpack in the Sierras, the Hwy 89/50/238 loop around Lake Tahoe will be open (snowfall closes it on the west side every winter) when you get there. That's a lucky break for you. Devote an entire afternoon to the drive.

Make sure you fill up your tank in Reno.   You'll have a jaw dropping experience when you see what gas costs around Lake Tahoe - especially on the Cali side.

The cheapest gas in the area by far, for some unfathomable reason, is on the south side of Carson City, along the main drag that used to be US 395 before they built the bypass. You can exit "old 395" and then just continue through town and take Hwy 50 up to the lake.

The Arco station was 30 cents/gallon cheaper than the one on South Virginia in Reno, when I passed through in November. Go figure.

I'm sure those gas prices will be $5-$6 bucks a gallon (who knows by then?) So we'll either rent a hybrid or a pair of mopeds maybe. Cant wait to see the wife on a moped with a  little helmet on.

$4.74 up here in Oregon is the cheapest, with many stations breaking the $5 barrier.

I had never seen Costco gas that high until Friday in Victorville at $5.45.  On Wednesday we filled up at Barstow Loves for $5.29, which was ten cents more per gallon that on last Sunday when it was $5.19.  Ouch!

Now for the facts

The average gas price in California in 2022 was approximately $5.87 per gallon. California experienced significant volatility in gas prices throughout 2022. Prices began the year around $3.25 per gallon and surged sharply after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February, with San Francisco reaching $5 per gallon in early March and Los Angeles hitting $6 per gallon by late March. By mid-June, California’s average price peaked at $6.364 per gallon, the highest recorded in the state’s history. Prices gradually declined in the latter part of the year, with averages dropping to around $5.15 per gallon in early September before rising again slightly in October. GasBuddy

Several factors contributed to California’s high gas prices, including state-specific taxes and fees, environmental programs like the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) and Cap & Trade, and limited refinery capacity, which made the state more susceptible to supply disruptions. Compared to the national average, which peaked around $5 per gallon in June, California consistently remained the most expensive state for gasoline. California State Portal

Overall, the annual average for 2022 in California is estimated at $5.87 per gallon, reflecting both the record highs in the summer and the moderate declines toward the end of the year. This figure underscores the state’s unique market dynamics and the impact of global and local events on fuel costs. California State Portal
