Just about every business in my town has "Help Wanted" and "Now Hiring" signs posted. When I ask what positions, what experience necessary, etc. the response is "We need people for all areas. We will train you. When can you start?"
Yet at every one of the usual corners are 'folks' with their signs "Need Food." "Hungry" and so on. Every day. They walk through parking lots panhandling.
Inside Walmart I encountered a fellow in a wheelchair, leaning over, looked to be struggling to put a shoe on straight. I asked "do you need some help?" ready to help him with the shoe. He said "I'm trying to get up enough to buy a ten dollar pair of shoes." I held out two one dollar bills I had ready access to in my purse. He frowned up, waved me off saying "No that won't do" and rolled on.
Those at the really heavy traffic intersections with their signs--seems like a real traffic hazard. Years ago complaints were lodged but the city directors said it was their freedom of speech and as long as they don't physically bother anyone they have the right.
Remember the line in a poem "Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink."
Now it is "Jobs jobs everywhere and not an applicant in sight."
I was in a quick mart when a lady came in asking for an application. She told the manager "I only want to stock." The clerk said "that's fine, we need you." The lady said "No nights." The manager said "No problem."d
However, I'm sure being off work AND getting paid was a pretty sweet deal. Go back to work? The horror!
