Isn't that pretty much down to whether he wants to/can cancel his Rio reservation and stay somewhere else?

If he doesn't/can't, then emphasize to him how he should avoid doing anything but sleeping there--eat/gamble/bar-hop almost anywhere else. Familiarize him with the various transit options. As far as that goes, the Flamingo city bus runs very often, 24/7, and he can take that to the Strip and transfer. Probably quicker, and certainly much cheaper, than taking a cab/Uber.

As far as other lodging options: I'd stay somewhere mid-Strip if I wanted to get the full Vegas experience. Downtown is surprisingly far away from the South Strip, and he'll want to go there at least once. He should also check out South Point.

The resident idiot didn't grasp that though.

Boiler, make sure you tell him to always have that room latch engaged when he is in the room and all of his valuables locked up in the room safe even when he is sleeping in the room.  I just saw in a Facebook group someone complaing about their room being robbed while they were asleep. I have seen a lot of posts like this about the RIO in the FB groups. Their security is apperently lacking. 

It's a shame.  I really wouldn't take that much to get that property back up to at least being as busy as Gold Coast or Orleans.  Just run like crap it appears.  

Uhhhh...even though this "news" is from Facebook, which is one of the most trustworthy, unimpeachable sources of truthy truth on the planet (as one of our most prolific posters constantly tells us), I smell a rat.

Thieves don't break into hotel rooms in the middle of the night. That's when there will be, um, you know, people in them. And people tend to object.

It's not that easy to break into a modern hotel room, and certainly not without making some noise in the process. Even if you have a key.

There's no percentage in breaking into a hotel room if you don't know that there's anything worth stealing in there.

There's no guarantee that if there IS anything valuable in there, it won't be in the room safe or otherwise inaccessible.

Security may be not up to snuff, but usually, everything that occurs in a hotel corridor is recorded on camera. Thieves know this.

And lastly...one or more people are asleep in the room...and the master thief enters stealthily and silently...finds and pockets the loot...and exits...ALL WITH NO ONE WAKING UP???
