It was indeed a lovely time, for kids at least. Neighbors gathered outside in the evening, and at the river for picnics (the moms, dads, and kids) at least twice in the summer. Christmas started after Thanksgiving and not before. Houses began to be air conditioned. TV was a big deal (rabbit ears and all). Community events, centennial celebrations, decoration day. Mom sewed cowgirl outfits for sis and I to go to the rodeo, Gene Autry there in person. Sis and I rode the city bus downtown, by ourselves, to have a hamburger and malted milkshake in a real drugstore. I can still taste them, a long gone taste. Fun was catching lightening bugs in a jar. Or finding four leaf clovers, stringing them into a necklace. Basically no pressure back then...for kids at least.
