Should an 18 year old be able to buy a semi-auto rifle with no training.....?

I own 7 or 8 guns, obviously not a gun nut since I am not sure of the exact number. They are all in the basement locked in a gun safe. All of these guns with the exception of one are family pass downs. I did legally purchase a 9mm several months back. I have yet to take it out and practice shoot with it.

My take on the gun issue is, NO ONE should own a AK or AR semi-automatic weapon with the only exception possibly being SWAT squads.

AR does not mean automatic rifle bu refers to the name of the original manufacturer- Armorllite

AK weapons are illegal. I think the photo of the one PJ showed is an AK

The toad doesn't know what he is talking about. It takes at least 5 seconds to recover from the kick, sight & pull the trigger & that's if one is real good shooter. The gun can be modified to use small caliber bullets for shooting smaller animals such as varmints or modified for large animals. It is a single shot weapon so an animal would not be "riddled " with bullets.

The emphasis should be on helping the mentally ill & recovering illegal guns. Last week a man was randomly shot on the subway by someone with an outstanding gun warrant.  A teenager in the Bronx was released with no charges after shooting a NYC cop.

Show me where I stated thay AR means ''automatic rifle''.

And also show me where an AR 15 is meant to shoot ''smaller animals''.

Your stupidity only exceeds your ignorance of what these guns are made for.

Show me where I stated thay AR means ''automatic rifle''.

It was a general fyi statement.  Most people think it stands for automatic rifle

And also show me where an AR 15 is meant to shoot ''smaller animals''.

There's a long list of excellent rifle cartridges well suited for varmint hunting. The best choice really comes down to the specific need and application. The AR-15 has made the.223 Rem. cartridge one of our most popular rounds and certainly a top varmint pick.

The vast majority of mass shooting perpetrators have been sane by any legal definition. And it's a fantasy to think that people who have homicidal tendencies can ALL be identified and diagnosed--with enough certainty that restrictions can be placed on them before they act.

The "identify all crazy people" and "turn schools into fortresses and give all the teacher GUNZ" are two standard Republican chants that are obviously intended to distract from the actual problem, which is the ridiculous proliferation of guns. "Identify all crazy people" fails on two counts: one, such identification is impossible, except maybe after the fact (which is obviously too late), and two, not all or even most mass shooters, historically, have been clinically insane.

Talking about exactly what can be done with this or that weapon is inane. The relevant point is that a semi-automatic weapon fires FAR more shots, FAR more rapidly, than are needed for self-defense. Or for hunting. Or for anything else except quickly slaughtering large numbers of people. It's stupid, dishonest, and disingenuous to argue that these weapons have any other use or purpose.

And no, you shouldn't go on.

I dont see why anyone should be able to buy that kind of weapon.   The dude who shot up Vegas was retired

There is no rational reason for civilians to have access to weapons designed specificially for mass casualties.

Agree and believe this would be my answer to the question posed.

Unrealistic to think that background checks would identify every ill-intended whack job.  And if they did, then what?  People closest to the problem such as parents, classmates, teachers/school administrators, would have the earliest knowledge of something seriously off.  No 100% prevention, but in some of those shootings there was glaring in-smebody's-face heads-up info ahead of time but no action taken.

Riiiight. Pellet gubs are for ''varmints''

You don't need a fucking NATO round for a skunk.

These are military weapons, and designed to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. That people buy them "for other purposes" doesn't change that, any more than someone buying a HumVee or H2 or whatever it's called makes it any less of a military-use-designed vehicle.

That aside, many if not most of the people who buy these things buy them for the express purpose of killing other people. They're building their widdle arsenals to prepare for the great race war or the glorious revolution.

Kevin's argument is the companies who know that they will never sell a gun to the military have decided to design their gun for the 0.000000009% that are used for mass casualties?  Has Kevin ever held a gun?  I have many friends who enjoys such guns, including my 28 year old boy.  None of my friends or relatives has ever shot anyone.

That's silly.

Once again, Kevin has nothing.  I'm confident that the President of Ukraine wished every one of his citizens had more than one gun.

You never need them until you do.
