New York had the most casualties of any state in the Civil War
During the entire war, New York provided more than 370,000 soldiers to the Union armies. Of these, 834 officers were killed in action, as well as 12,142 enlisted men. Another 7,235 officers and men perished from their wounds, and 27,855 died from disease. Another 5,766 were estimated to have perished while incarcerated in Southern prisoner-of-war camps.
As a FYI, my family served in the Civil War
The state government spent $38 million on the war effort; counties, cities and towns spent another $111 million, especially for recruiting bonuses.
I think the debt has been repaid.

Virtually no one in the North signed up to "free the slaves," except perhaps for black troops in the latter stages of the war. For that matter, freeing the slaves was NOT Lincoln's professed aim. Most recruits signed up to get some excitement in their lives; because it was employment, and sometimes, they were lured by bonuses. Most didn't expect the war to last nearly as long as it did.
So this wasn't some kind of noble crusade. It was a bunch of young men being offered the chance to do something else besides working on the farm. And the casualty figures were a complete shock. No one thought that the casualty rate would be as high as it was.

I have a long lost relative who died in the cival war while battling for the North during our cival war. I also have one long lost relative who had two slaves. I don't have a clue if he treated them well or poorly. I have lost nor gained anything from these two men. I feel no pride nor guilt from these situations, nor should I. Should black men pay me money because my relative died to free them? I think not. This woke stuff is all bullshit.

What you have felt or experienced is irrelevant. This is about the lives of black people, and how slavery made their lives worse today.
Slavery ended 158 years ago. Slavery has nothing to do with the problems of blacks today. It is just a ploy to get more free shit. NY ended slavery in 1817.

It shows shocking ignorance to think that slavery isn't still impacting the lives of black people today. For one thing, society still doesn't consider them to be equal to whites.
