So what are YOU willing to do about it?

You are making this all too complicated.

Did you know that research has shown that getting someone to make a voting plan increases their likelihood of voting by about 9%? And do you know what happens when you get low-propensity voters to the polls 9% more often? You get control of the United States Senate.

So are you willing to commit to volunteer in some form in the next elections? (And you thought I was joking when I said I was going to be your stalker.)

In Oregon, there's not much doubt that Democrats will be elected to the Senate, or that a Democratic Presidential candidate will win the state. So the consequential politics here are strictly regional/local. And there's rarely much competition. The southern, eastern, and coastal areas always elect Republicans. The central valleys (Portland, Salem, Eugene) always elect Democrats. So about all I could do to further the Democrat brand would be to travel to/start calling people in towns like Pendleton or Roseburg.

That wouldn't be a productive use of my time. And if I went to those towns and whispered the word "Democrat," I might get shot at. Remember, rural Oregon is Cliven Bundy Land.

It would be fun to travel to those Trumper towns and start randomly teargassing people, but I don't think that's what you had in mind. I just moved out of the shithole Trumper burg I was in, and I relish no longer seeing a sign on the wall of the local coffee shop saying "We encourage our customers to carry guns" and being able to get my hair cut without being treated to a dissertation about how the Democrats want to destroy the country. So I would definitely volunteer to go back there and maybe burn the place to the ground. Again, though, not what you had in mind.

Nothing worth working on in your area. No problem.

How about Ron Johnson's Senate seat in Wisconsin? Or Lil' Marco in Florida? You just sit at your computer and text (or call) to a bunch of numbers - from the campaign's phone number, not yours - ID those who need further follow-up when the polls open or those who need more information about voting - delete those who say "stop" - and label the ones that text filthy things or identify themselves as loyal Republicans.

All from the comfort of your own home. Is it too much to ask?

I would only make an effort to affect a Senate race in a state where there was actually some chance of the Republican candidate losing. That said, there will be at least four such races in 2022. So yes, it's something I would consider. However, I'm kinda rabidly against robocalls and such, as I get from 6-10 of them every single day; I consider them a real intrusion and the acts of assholes. So I would only engage in such an activity if the recipients of the calls had already indicated their interest in some manner.

I like my idea better. The day before the election, we hold a massive Republican BBQ, all you can eat and free beer. Heck, we'll even pass out bumper stickers with the Republican candidate's name on them. The idea will be that the attendees will be in no shape to vote the next day. A dozen or so such events in a swing state and we could pick off a thousand or more Republican voters. That might be all we need!

They aren't robocalls. You keep on restating what I say dishonestly.

Shall I put you down for all talk and no action?

I only act if my actions will be consequential. Otherwise, I'm wasting my time on this mortal orb, so little of which is allotted to us.

I'll be talking to the local Democratic Party offices when the 2022 election rolls around and ask them how I can contribute. That's how I wound up stumping for Hillary (and escaped with my skin) in 2016. If they think I could be useful manning the phones, I'll be glad to do that.

I still say that unsolicited phone calls are inherently intrusive and I'm unlikely to feel any differently about that in the near future. If there's some way I could call people who have in some way indicated that they are OK with being called, I would feel a lot more comfortable with that. This feeling is partly due to my 2016 experiences, wherein a small but significant minority of people definitely did NOT want to see me show up on their doorstep (and that didn't appear to have anything to do with their political affiliation; some people just don't want to be bothered).

So put me down for anything you wish; whatever I do will be my decision, which I won't be making for about 18 months in any event.
