Socialists are the "Flat Earthers" of economics

attributed to Mike Maloney, and that ain't no baloney!

That's grossly stupid. A "flat earther" is someone who believes something that is patently untrue. Socialism is a socioeconomic system used to one degree or another by dozens of countries.

I've noticed that all the fools bleating about SOOOOOCIALISM don't even understand what it is.To hear them babble, anything that the gummint does that they don't like is SOOOOOCIALISM. I heard somebody complain that a restaurant was socialist because they didn't take credit cards.

MAGA/Republipigs like to paint ANY government policy or program that doesn't directly benefit them as social as socialism. These responsibly fiscal conservatives don't want to see taxpayer dollars wasted on keeping people from starving. A billion dollars a day to kill people, though, is a wise use of funds.

MAGA defines "Socialism" as anything they dont like.

I can give you a hundred examples of Socialism from the current administration and Republican state/local laws....and MAGA will deny all of them as being Socialist.

List 100: go!

Indeed, someone should  outline and define the traditional tenets of socialism during this argument. There are some 'hybrid' socialistic programs in some of the Nordic countries ( Finland, Norway, Iceland, etc.) that involve true market economies interlaced with the typical socialistic 'collective' control by the local governments. Some of those hybrid programs have apparently worked and include the 'happiness' scores of these country's citizens.

Most of the true power people in the US are tradional capitalists and they influence many aspects of our lives in one direct or indirect way . Good luck converting these highly  influential individuals and business groups to socialistic practices in our lifetimes. Capitalism is a longstanding national tradition, too; this argument pits cooperation, welfare, and govt control vs competition , perceived exploitation, and individualistic liberty. I'm fully admitting I don't want the government controlling every aspect of my days. There's a country song in there somewhere, girls.

Before we do that, we need you to tell us 1) what you think socialism is 2) precisely what's supposedly wrong with it.

Trump is the most socialistic President of all time. Under Trump, the goverment is taking an ownership stake in private companies. That is one of the key tenets of socialism government ownership of the means of production.

 Bullshit - as usual.

These are the companies that the US goverment took an ownership interest under you boy Trump:

Major Companies with Government Equity Stakes:
  • Intel Corp. (INTC): The U.S. government holds a roughly 10% equity stake in Intel (converted from CHIPS Act grants), along with warrants to acquire additional shares
    .
MP Materials (NYSE:MP): The Pentagon holds a significant equity stake in this rare-earth mining company to protect national security supply chains.
Lithium Americas Corp. (NYSE:LAC): The government holds an equity stake of about 10% in the company.
Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE:TMQ): The U.S. holds an equity stake, along with 10-year call options (warrants) for additional shares tied to mine construction milestones.
US Steel Corp.: The government holds a "golden share" in the steelmaker.
Westinghouse: The government holds options to purchase up to 20% of the nuclear power company, alongside forced IPO rights.
Other Critical Tech: The government holds stakes or holds options to buy shares in rare-earth processors like Vulcan Elements, ReElement Technologies, and USA Rare Earth.
Council on Foreign Relations +4

Are any of these "socialism"?

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance, Workers' Compensation, Minimum Wage, Maximum Hours, The Interstate Highway System, OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency, Pure Water Act,  Clean Air Act, Pell Grants, Land Grant Colleges, Fanny Mae, Freddy Mac, The VA, FDIC, Flood Control Act, Aide to Elementary and Secondary Education, SNAP, WIC, SSI, etc. for some just off the top of my head.
