Tarriffs coming?

I'm all for tariffs on unfair Chinese dumped goods.   Since when are you?   You blasted Obama for tariffing China and played the communist card.   Trump says he's tariffing China and Europe and South Korea....and on and on.

so when did you change your mind?   Was it the day Trump told you to?

Oh my.  I've only talked about China's unfair trade practices a thousand times.  And PJ supports this.  Okay, explain.

Boilerboob, even someone as stupid as you knows that the Trump tariffs will be imposed on ALL imported goods. I know you hate the heathen Chinee, but there's nothing wrong with trading with China.

I'm buying a 2025 Toyota 4Runner, the first complete redesign in 14 years, I can't buy it now because Toyota pushed  back the launch date until Spring 2025.

10% to 20% on $54,000 will be painful, maybe taking my cash purchase and forcing me into a loan for a portion of the purchase. Which would really suck, basically reducing my discretionary spending for a while. Which never happened to me in the last 4 years.

It would be different if AMURRICA offered vehicles that were even closely comparable to Toyota's and Honda's in quality and price. But it doesn't. Only a fool would blow his hard-earned money on a US-brand vehicle.

But I do believe that there are still Toyota factories in the US? Would those vehicles count as domestically made? Or would they get tariffed anyway because the company is owned by, as Trump would put it, slant-eyed yellow monkeys?

The 4Runner is being built in Japan. So who knows how that might play out.

What part of my post did you have trouble reading?  Trump says he wants tarriffs on everyone - Mexico, Europe, Australia, Japan, South Korea.     And  never once did you bless Obama's tarriffs on China.  Not even once.    I spent a month on this board being called a communist when I defended Obama's tarriffs on Chinese tires.

ps - What American made company did you buy your TV from?

Can't you buy one right now and deal with the financing later? That would lock in the current price, wouldn't it?

I wonder what the Drumpf tariffs will do to the used car market, choking off the supply of new cars and making used ones more attractive. Like during and after the pandemic.

No, they're still selling 2024s. 2025s are slated for spring. If I could, I would buy one right now.

My take on tariffs, at this point, is if you think tariffs won't increase the cost of just about everything we buy,  then you don't understand tariffs. There is a reason companies offshored manufacturing, and I liked the approach of the CHIP Act, it incentivizes companies to move manufacturing here with tax incentives. When a company builds a manufacturing plant in the US because it gets $3.5 billion in incentives and then spends $35 billion in investing in it, I think it's a huge win and it was targeted to the industries that are a national security threat.

Do you think Trump has the sense to keep the CHIP act alive, or is he just going to do what he did in 2017, which was to do a complete slash-and-burn of his predecessor's policies?

Also, do you think that maybe Trump truly doesn't understand who pays tariffs? His rhetoric seems to suggest that he thinks  that the nation that sells the imported goods pays them.

How long will it take for Trumpflation to hit, and how bad will it be? And how will Trump weasel away from the blame?

And lastly, how do you personally intend to handle Trumpflation (aside from vehicle purchases)?

I do know that the CHIP Act, The Infrastructure Bill, and the Inflation Reduction Act(I'm on the fence on this one) have been passed into law, so they will be much harder to undo. We've seen that MAGA and Trump are not very good at unifying to pass legislation, so we'll see if they can form a comprehensive plan to repeal these laws.  I know the state of Colorado has benefited from the Infrastructure bill, $100 million of the $300 million for the Floyd Hill I-70 improvements are from the bill, this is probably the largest impact. On a smaller scale, Boebert took some credit for getting additional funding from the bill for the construction of a second bridge over I-70 in Glenwood Springs that was very much needed, and that had been in the planning stages for years looking for funds to build it.

He was able to slash and burn executive orders, very easy to do, but he was unable to repeal Obama Care. Heck, the Republicans have been working for 12 years to repeal it, sadly conservatives always seem to be looking backward, and not forward.

Who cares if Trump understands how tariffs work, he's either lying or stupid, same result, MAGA believes it all.

I have no idea if he'll enact the tariffs, so we'll see about the inflation. I don't make predictions.

We'll buy the 4Runner no matter what, my wife is driving a 2007 4Runner that we bought new, about 3 years ago she said she was ready for a new one, but only a new 4Runner(she loves that SUV, :) ) Neither of us liked the current look of the 4Runners, so we talked about the redesign coming and she wanted to wait for it.

We also like international travel so it would be interesting to see if we could target countries that may not experience a lot of inflation, and find ways to get there relatively inexpensively. MAGA suffered greatly during the last 4 years, they've whined and cried non-stop for 4 years about inflation. I on the other hand have thrived, and we're better off than we were 4 years ago and I expect we'll do the same no matter who's President.  I seem to be much less impacted by the government and who the President is than MAGA, who depends on the government to improve their lives.
