Tesla's newest plant to be built in Austin Texas

Elon Musk has voiced his unhappiness with California regulations, siting the difficulty of doing business within the state.  This led to Musk's decision to look outside of California for Tesla’s second and largest assembly plant to date.

Yeah, billionaire industrialists generally like to locate their enterprises where there are none of those pesky environmental or labor laws. Also, I'm sure that California told him that he wasn't going to get his expected lifetime break from property and income taxes there.

Reno pretty much spread its legs for Musk. And now there's a housing shortage there and the plant (out beyond Mustang) doesn't contribute a dime in taxes.

Tesla sells cars in large part because of tax rebates issued by both the Federal and California governments....something Boilerman and every Republican vehemently opposed .    And that was coupled with a narrative about the waste of money surrounding the development of EV technology.

and now they are bragging about   That Manufacturing being in Texas.

i have no comment beyond saying how thrilling it is to see conservatives embrace the future of energy after having to be dragged kicking and screaming through all of the government investment that made it possible

I'm not embracing nor whining about any technology.  I'm pointing out that California is difficult for manufacturing companies to business in.  This is specifically the major reason why this plant is not to be built within California.

Regarding the federal tax subsidies for Tesla cars, they went away about 18 months ago.  I have zero problem with electric cars and I suspect that they are the wave of the future within the US.  I do not, and did not agree with the federal subsidies, however.

Yeah yeah yeah, California is a liberal state yada yada yada. Somehow, though, it manages to have the sixth largest economy in the world, even though everybody there believes in SOOOOOOOOCIALISM and wants to destroy the country. We've heard it all before.

The "specific reason" why Musk didn't build in California is that the state balked at his conditions, which included eternal tax moritoriums. He wanted to not pay CA income tax or local property tax as long as he was there. Of course he was told to stick it.

Electric cars are not a new technology. The first one was built in 1912. The only thing determining whether people would buy them was how cheap and convenient it was to charge them up--and what kind of range they had. It's only recently that electric cars have begun to approach gas-engine cars in those respects. Even now, though, the longest-range electric cars barely approach the shortest ranges of conventional cars, and you can still have a lot of trouble finding an EV charging station---plus, it takes a LOT longer to charge up an EV than it does to fill a gas tank.

For the above reasons, I still prefer hybrids.

High tax California has their own subsidies on top of the ones the Federal government deployed....which is a big reason whyCalifornia buys more Teslas than the rest of the country combined.    On behalf of California taxpayers I tell Elon Musk, "you're welcome"

As for California not being business friendly?   I'll let the market caps of Silicon Valley companies speak for themselves

Well, it's of course a lie that CA isn't business-friendly, but conservatives have to keep on touting that lie because otherwise, they'd have to admit that liberal governance is actually pretty damn good for a state's economy.

Just look at the ideological bent of the richest and the poorest states. Would you rather live in blue California or red Alabama?
