Texas House slaps Democrats with $9k fines after walkout

House rules allow for $500-per-day fines against lawmakers who leave the state to intentionally break quorum. The penalties were enforced after Democrats abandoned the Capitol in an effort to derail Republican-led redistricting. According to Quorum Report editor Scott Braddock, letters were sent Thursday informing Democrats of fines totaling more than $9,000. The charges include $7,000 in fines and an additional $2,354.25 in costs the House incurred during their absence. Democrats’ flight collapsed when Gov. Greg Abbott called a second special session, forcing them back to Austin.
