To each their own. I like where I live. It's not the Redwoods, where I was raised, but it has afforded a comfortable living for myself and my family. Our house, which we have fixed up as we wanted, will be paid off the year I retire (2027), and when my wife retires in (2029), we will enjoy our modest lives in retirement.
One of our bucketlist trips is to travel up through Oregon and Washington, stopping at various towns along the way, eventually going to British Columbia. After that we want to head over to the Dakotas, stopping at Little Bighorn along the way.....since I am a history guy. Can't wait!!
The Oregon Coast is my backyard. I've spent nine of my last ten summers there.
The Washington Coast, though pleasant, is kind of meh scenically, because tribal land ownership, Olympic National Park, and the somewhat forbidding topography mean that you don't get to see the ocean much ..or the inland mountains. The Oregon Coast is far more scenic.
I would highly recommend reserving some (lots of) time for driving around Vancouver Island and the Sea to Sky to Whistler on the mainland. Stunning scenery. Nice people.
If you'd like to get a sense of what it's like to drive Hwy 101, check out the relevant "Traveling Robert" YouTube videos from a few years ago. He RVs all over the continent and videos his experiences from the dashcam POV. Really gives a sense of what it's like to be a tourist on the OR coast.
Robert twice expressed the sentiment that he wished he'd set aside two weeks for his Oregon 101 segments. I would recommend planning that as well. Your progress northward will be slow indeed.
