Thank God I live in Oregon

Oregon is such a great state that half of the state want to join Idaho

In order to honestly answer that question, one would have to make a year-over-year comparison, and since gathering that data is a very new exercise, and one that's only done honestly in blue states, I don't see much to go on.

That aside, what exactly is "the homeless problem"? It seems to depend on one's political/ideological bent:

1) Conservatives: these people exist, and we can't stand the sight of them. Get rid of them!

2) Liberals: these people need help, and we feel sorry for them. Let's help them!

You can see this divide in the speechifying of politicians when this issue comes up. Some (guess which) make an appeal to "law and order" and paint the homeless as lowlifes, drug users, thieves, and vandals. Others say it's a social problem brought on by income inequality and should be dealt with using compassion and charity.

The talk in Portland is that the problem is getting worse, but unlike many other cities, the proposed solution isn't to just gather them all up and dump them somewhere, maybe in the ocean--it's to build affordable housing. And that highlights the cause of the problem's growth--rising housing costs. There are quite a few homeless people in Portland who work full time but can't afford an apartment.

Portland is a desirable place to live and its weather is quite mild most of the year. That means that we are attractive to homeless people/people can become homeless and still stay here. It's more possible to be homeless and still exist here than it is in cities with harsher climates/more drastic anti-homeless policies and atmosphere.

But the turds on the sidewalk make walking a difficult thing these days.  I'm talking about the liberals.

"Half of the state" geographically--and less than a tenth of the population.

Stupid Tom thinks that votes should count according to the size of the county a voter inhabits. Well, he's a fan of the Slavery College, so I can see why he might be confused.

Stupid Tom.

Iggo baby, this forum has been full of criticisms of Portland from MAGA morons who have never visited, let alone lived here, and have been fed their pap from Fox Nooze et al. You're not being even remotely original.

But as far as your asshole comment goes--I'd much rather be surrounded by and associate with liberals. They're much nicer people than conservatives. I've lived in many different places, and without exception, the places where people were ruder and nastier were conservative areas. Oh, and the crime there was far worse, too.

Our government and our people are going to protect womens' rights, our fantastic health care system, our stewardship of our magnificent environment, and the commitment to democratic norms and ideals. Donald Trump won't get to us here--he couldn't even find us on a map, and his orange rage is focused on California anyway.

Portland is a beautiful place with awesome people. Our residents MAGA who sneer at Portland do so out of envy. Y'all really should visit before Trump makes it illegal to do so. You'd be impressed by how nice everything looks and how pleasant and considerate the people are. And I say that not because of politics, but because of experience. It's just a much more pleasant place to be than most other locations and societal milieux.

As we did when Trump caused the nationwide spread of covid, we will accept refugees to the extent of our ability. After all, we won't have inflation here, as we'll make free trade deals with Canada, Mexico, and Asia, and our food prices will be dramatically lower than elsewhere, since unlike the rest of the country, we'll still have farm workers.

Come on over. We'll have some awesome craft beer waiting for you.

We have relatively few people like you here. That's why we make wise decisions about our own futures.

You would, though, be welcome if you ever changed your stripes and decided to live someplace where people are decent to one another.

Kevin, anyone and everyone who has visited Portland before and after your supported policies knows that Portland has become a Cluster Fuck.

Yeah, sure, "anyone" who, like you, has watched some rando's YouTube video. You simply have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

Remember when Millerscum posted a video about how terrible the Portland streets were? Except...the video was shot in ISTANBUL! LOL!

Try not to get ALL of your "news" from conservitard conspiracy theory sources, Boiler.

I posted a link to the devastating homeless encampment map in your toilet bowl town.  You might live in your armed security and gated enclave, but the rest of the regular people have to deal with reality.

Do you have walls and gates?  Racist.

Actually, I drive to work directly past a homeless camp. Every month, I go to Walmart and purchase basic toiletries in bulk and then bag them up and hand them out. Walmart sells them to me wholesale, as is their policy, so my $100 goes pretty far.

I'm sure you'd say I'm "enabling" them by doing that. I.know very well, though, that personal hygiene is a challenge when you live on the street. And at least half of these people have jobs.

So I could sneer at and demonize these people, or I could try to help them. I'm sure you would choose differently.
