The reason why the Republipigs want it is they usually win low-turnout elections and usually lose high-turnout elections. Therefore, in their diseased minds, they think that preventing as many people as possible from voting is the winning strategy.

I think that's the numbers game they are playing. But I think it's a strategy that will end up backfiring.
It will be much easier for people in and around urban centers to go to a brick and mortar location to register than people in rural areas.
Blue States are also more likely to implement programs to waive fees for getting birth certificates or assist with transportation needs etc.
When I think about the potential obstacles/complications this law places in front of people that are eligible to register/vote, and I think about which States/Counties are more likely to help with those problems, it makes me think this law might not work out the way many of the proponents think it will.
I don't think the proponents of this law realize how sharp the other edge of their sword is.

What are those obstacles?
From the Voter ID Project
Just over 1% of adult U.S. citizens in the survey do not have any form of government-issued photo identification, which amounts to nearly 2.6 million people.
US passport or US passport card
US Naturalization Certificat
US Certificate of Citizenship
Military ID Veterans ID
Student ID
Tribal ID
Hunting License
Gun/firearm permit
People in rural areas are more likely to have a drivers license as they need a vehicle to get around. We were told that it was a hardship for people to get a REAL ID to fly but when the deadline came due people got them.
We were told that voter id in Georgia would suppress turnout; it didn't
God, Tom is stupid. "People got them." But many people didn't. People survived the Holocaust. So I guess the Holocaust was no big deal.
Tom thinks that 2.6 million people being deprived of their right to vote is perfectly OK.
Stupid little evil Tom.

One would need to take a birth certificate, passport or other proof of citizenship to a brick and mortar location. Not everyone has those documents and not everyone can easily get them. Not a tremendous obstacle but still an obstacle.
Additionally not everyone is going to be close to a registration office. How many offices are open? Where are they located? How long does it take to get there? It could take hours.
Why not have a law that simply requires States to verify the citizenship status of anyone that registers? That seems much easier.

Yeah, but you have to consider that the "millions of illegal voters" mantra is a core tenet of MAGA doctrine and belief. Trump barfed it up when he lost in 2020. And the whole gang climbed aboard the shortbus.
Thus, this "choke off voting" crusade doesn't have to be rational, let alone effective. I agree with you that it might boomerang on the Republipigs.
The Pigs are subscribing to the fantasy that all they have to do is keep people who are unable to obtain ID from voting and they will win all 56 states, as Trump told us. The theory is, those people are all bums and lowlifes and welfare cheats, and such people always vote Democrat.
But here's the thing. Such people also live in red states. And Clem Goober, who lives twenty miles from town on a dirt road, might not go to the trouble to get ID or to register. These requirements reduce ALL voter populations.
I of course, because I'm an American, favor making it as easy as possible to vote. MAGAs like Tom aren't Americans, so they favor making it as difficult as possible to vote.
You're right in that blue states would counter the Evil Anti-Voting Act by marshaling resources and easing requirements. But it's looking like it has no chance to get through the Senate.
Replacement birth certificates and drivers licenses can be obtained online.
Not difficult

Nope. You have to prove your identity for either process. And how do you do that if you don't have identity documents? Catch-22.
So what liberals are saying that people who don't have proper id are to lazy to get it.
