That policy has been in place for decades, and there's nothing unusual about it. Whenever Congress, the Senate, and the President and Vice President are all in one place, a designated survivor is chosen.

What is it that you find laughable?

He appears to be utterly ignorant of both the existence of the designated survivor procedure and the fact that the survivor is chosen at random and could be, and has been, either a Democrat or a Republican.

He finds it "laughable" because a Democrat was chosen. I guess he would find it equally laughable if a Republican was chosen? Or not?

It's a smart policy and ensures the continuity of government in case of a terrorist/nuclear attack.

The designated survivor for the Orange Pig's 2025 State of the Union address was Doug Collins--a Republican. The Survivor is chosen at random, though some individuals may be excluded for various reasons.

I recommend the Netflix series "Designated Survivor," with Kiefer Sutherland in the title role, who finds himself President after a disaster kills all but two members of Congress and the Senate along with the President and VP during a State of the Union address.

The Survivor policy dates back to the Eisenhower administration.
