Germany, Italy, and Japan only became lovers of democracy after dictators took it away and dragged them through the horrors of war. We may need the same awful, but purifying experience.
Now, there won't be any excuses. Trump won't magically fix everything. He won't even try. He'll have all sorts of excuses and will blame everyone but himself, but the people won't let him off the hook.
I truly don't know what will happen then. Historically, when tinpot dictators have shown themselves to be empty bags of wind, they've been overthrown. I don't know how that would happen here.
One thing's for sure: we've just held our last free election.
