Hillary carried way too much baggage for middle America. Whether right or wrong that was just the way it was. Way to many states she did not even visit in the rust belt and guess what got her beat? Yep the rust belt. Her honesty was a huge concern, she just seemed like another New York know it all. Bill mentioned to her and her staff that they were not campaigning near enough in rust belt states, he was so right.
I think Hillary lost, plain and simple, because she's a woman. An identical male candidate would have crushed Trump. Middle America, being, well, kind of dense collectively, was willing to vote for the con man because he promised them lotsa great jobs and free beer. The reality of Middle America is that many of the jobs there are obsolescing because of new technology. Hillary could have, and should have, come out and said that times would be tough but that she had plans to ease the transition for them. The detailed plan was on her website. Nobody read it. In the absence of practical solutions offered them, Clem Cornpone and Tucky Buckford went for the con man.
I think Hillary made the mistake of thinking that these down-to-earth Midwesterners wouldn't buy Trump's scam. She overestimated their collective intelligence. It's like the snake oil salesman in the traveling show. Most people know instinctively that he's a fraud--and then they buy half a dozen bottles anyway.
In any event, she's out of the picture, and the lesson the Democrats can learn from 2016 is that Trump and the Republicans will trot out all sorts of irrelevant crap and conduct a smear campaign, backed by lots of juicy alt-right conspiracy theories, whoever the candidate ultimately is. There will be virtually no cogent discussion of the issues--Trump will avoid that, because he knows that he can't compete there. Hell, Hillary had a 134-page document available on her website that stated her positions and plans regarding every major issue--and what everybody wound up discussing instead was that she (gasp!) SENT EMAILS.
