Did you know that he holds the all-time record for money lost by a businessman in a given decade? It was the 1990s, and the amount was something like $2 billion.
That he had that much money to lose indicated that he had been a very successful grifter up to that point. His various moves afterward and their unending failure suggest that he went out of his depth when he tried to actually own and run a business. He thought (and still thinks) that the bigly genius strategy is to not pay your bills. That only works until your reputation starts to precede you.
If someone gave me $300 million, I'd just put it in grade AAA+ investments and live large on $10 million a year. I wouldn't have to go to Epstein rape parties, as the girls would be falling all over me once they saw me lighting cigars with $100 bills. It takes a special kind of stupid to start with $300 million and wind up flat broke.
