There was a mandate that required people to pay their own way instead of getting "free shit". But Boilerman and his approved leadership believed that to be an outrage so they go rid of it. Now we have free shit.

He is talking about the mandate that you buy health insurance if it isn't provided by your employer that Trump did away with. Now these people can go to the emergy room and get free services.

The reason those subsidies are there is that private insurance has suffered a complete market failure. If insurance companies charge the premium that medical costs dictate 70-80% of the population can't afford to buy the policies. Since the average out of pocket on a family plan is $17.5k a year even those that can afford the premium often can't afford to use the polices. That is and has been my beef with the ACA. Why is the government propping up a failed business model?

If you sit down with an actuary and tell them to devise a major medical health insurance plan that will turn a profit for the insurance company with a $500 deductible and $6k per-year out of pocket limit 60-70% of the adult population won't be able to afford the premium let alone come up with the 6k out of pocket if something happens.
That is why the ACA has subsidies. They make these private market-based policies at least theoretically affordable enough for most of the adult population. If the private health insurance market weren't in market failure, there would be no need for the subsidies and the health insurance industry would be able to come up with ethical products people could afford. Not being able to design products that are ethical and people can afford is a market-based failure.
Due to all the govt regulations, it is impossible to have a low cost market based policy
