Trump-proofing our states

The silver lining is that Trump can only fuck up federal policies, agencies, etc. States still have considerable power to improve people's lives and safeguard their rights. For instance, California and Oregon have long had more stringent environmental regulations than the Feds mandate. Trump's pro-pollution agenda won't change that. Similarly, governors can dictate who gets rounded up and dragged away and who doesn't, because both law and law enforcement are primarily state concerns. ICE or other asshole agents will have to prove that these FEELTHY IMMERGENTS are guilty of federal crimes. Accusations won't be enough.

Governors in several blue states are formulating plans to protect us from the worst of Trump's excesses. Fortunately, while Trump has shat on the Federal court system and installed his lackeys everywhere, a district judge is more likely to be a Democrat than a Republican if he/she is in a blue state.

So the red states will devolve to a nativist, fascist hell, but we blue state folks are going to soldier on, with good health care even if Trump kills the ACA, with a KILLER economy that won't subsidize the Trumper goobers any longer after he kills the IRA, and plenty of good, cheap food grown by people who have fled from lynch mobs in places like Tay-ucks-ass.

I can't wait for secession! No more of my tax dollars going to buy booze for the bucktoothed, inbred red state crowd!

You've been forewarning the secession thing since the election. When does that process actually commence? How's that process work again? How are you and your colleagues gonna do it?

The process, as you put it, could go about in several ways. The most likely catalyst would be a gross and horrific act by the Trump Empire (formerly USA) such as cutting off Social Security benefits, disaster aid, federal highway funding, etc. to states that didn't vote for Turd the last three times (which would definitely include WA, OR, and CA). Then, those states could make the legal argument that the federal government had broken its contract with them and therefore, it no longer was entitled to their allegiance. A regional convention could be created, with the express purpose of putting secession to the voters.

Whether that violates the US Constitution or not would be a moot point. The Trump Supreme Court (9-0 at this point after Trump had the remaining liberal justices arrested and executed) would validate the states' secession happily, because removing their congressional and senatorial representation, not to mention their Electors, would cement Republican control for generations, if not the Thousand-Year Trumpf Reich. This is something that the RepubliQ would welcome with open arms, and as I'm sure you already know, or if not, you're gonna learn, that legality isn't going to be an issue regarding something that MAGA and Trump want.

From a societal standpoint, you also need to consider that the values of the blue and red states are so different, they can no longer coexist as elements of the same country. Pacifica and the US could still trade and have mutually open borders. No reason why the split couldn't be amicable.

And what are the odds, in your view, of this secession becoming successful? I don't think it's possible without a constitutional amendment ( perhaps through a convention of states); the odds of that happening are pretty scant ( close to zero). If in the very unlikely event any of those scenarios were to actually take place,  your state or group of states would have to forego all those federal funds that all states rely on for a multitude of programs and services. That means your seceeded state/s would have to raise taxes on residents ( income, property, road, ad infinitum) to survive, wouldn't it? Then the citizens might  want to overthrow your newly established  govt? Back to square one / ground zero?

There is no provision for secession in the Constitution; thus the need for an amendment. I also looked up a YouGov poll from spring 2024 that showed only 17% of Oregonians approve of potential secession (along with 24% of Washington state residents and 29% of Californians); your potential secession coalition wasn't very strong this past spring. Perhaps the recent election outcome bolstered those numbers and your potential venture; you'll need the push.

No, we pay more to the federal government than we take in, so cutting that cord would be fiscally positive. I don't know the Oregon number, but CA gives up $125 million more than it takes in. An independent Pacifica would be easily able to replace federal funding with its own.

I don't think permission from the other states would be sought or needed--but as I said, Republicans--in absolute control of the country at this point-;would enthusiastically support our separation and would ram it through somehow, with a decree by Emperor Trump.

The secession movement didn't have much steam this spring, because we thought there was a good chance Democrats would win. Clearly, we underestimated the stupidity of the American people.

"Fiscally positive", ehh? You must've received your math training from the same bunch that trains the US Congress?

Yep! When you stop giving away money to others, in this case, other states, that's fiscally positive!

Do you need me to further explain this to you? Seems pretty basic.
