That's fucking stupid, Tom. NBC chose to focus on the protests themselves, with the realization that those who participate realize the inherent risks, but think that the cause they are fighting for is worth it.
The difference, Tom, is that attending a Trump rally does nothing other than titillate and gratify the "base" and Trump himself. It won't accomplish anything; everybody who attends will already be a rabid Trumper and there won't be any "converts"--especially since you'll have to pay to get in.
In short, Tom, the protests accomplish something (and we've seen that in both the sharp rise in public awareness and law and policy changes). A Trump rally accomplishes nothing other than to provide entertainment and gratification for the type of people who are entertained and gratified by such things--like you, I guess.
It's not a double standard in any form to focus on the unnecessary dangers posed by the upcoming Trump hate rally. I've also read a dozen articles on the dangers posed by the protests. Several news segments on that exact topic have recently aired on NBC.
But you'll hear what you want to hear, and see what you choose to see.

You're not listening, or you're not understanding.
The rally itself is meaningless. It'll just be a replay of the last dozen or so Trump hate rallies. Trump will mumble, the MAGA morons will cheer, and the Trump campaign will make more money to pay for attack ads. It won't change the voters' minds one bit, and won't bring anybody new into the fold. Therefore, its only meaningful consequence will be a massive surge in infections and resultant deaths. The rally itself won't be worth any air time. Do you really think we'll see anything we haven't seen before?
Nobody really cares about the MAGA morons getting their jollies. They care about said morons leaving the rally and infecting tens of thousands of others. That's the only thing that matters, and therefore the only thing that the news should cover.
