So, "I don't like him as a person, but I like his policies" isn't playing so well now. The overarching lesson is that character does matter.

I hear that from MAGA one way or another all the time, and my reaction is, what's to like about his policies? Unless your life is driven and your soul is consumed by race hatred, there's nothing the Turd has done that any rational person would approve of.
But I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. In America, to a large proportion of the electorate, character DOESN'T matter. The mild Republican rebellion isn't because the scales have fallen from their eyes and they've finally realized what a horrible person Trump is. It's because their rice bowls are empty, and that's the one thing that the public doesn't tolerate, regardless of their political affiliation.
So if and when this Iran mess is resolved and Turdiffs are blotted out, and consumer prices return to normal, all the MAGAs who have been grumbling will happily clamp their mouths onto Trump's dick once again.
I'm appalled that ANYONE voted for the Fucking Turd, but it is what it is.
