Trump thinks he can pardon himself

"If it weren’t possible to indict him for crimes like this, Congress would have no way of knowing of any criminal activity conducted by the President outside the scope of his official functions."

Bullcrap. It would be breaking news on CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, HuffPost. Yahoo News, the NYT, the WaPo, and every other left-wing media outlet, and it would remain breaking news for months, promoted everyday. Avenatti's media treatment is a perfect example of how that machine works. His on-air interviews are somewhere around 160 now.

"As to the idea that one can pardon oneself, I don’t think that holds up at all. If that were true, there would be no point having an Impeachment clause in the Constitution that specifies it applies to the President as the President could never be impeached because he could simply pardon himself or herself."

More bullcrap. The House and the Senate would still have the power to remove him from office after he pardoned himself.

That is all you guys really want...overturn a Presidential election because your candidate didn't win....

Its an open question as to whether a sitting president can pardon himself.   We've never had to do it before because we've never had a president that both required it and also had the gall to use it.   Nixon reportedly considered it.

One can keep crying "fake news" all they want with the rest of the birthers.   But its now an undisputed fact that:

1) Trump's son met with Russian operatives to coordinate dirt about his oppponent.   And then he lied about it.

2) Donald Trump has been forced to acknowledge he dictated that lie after initially denying it

3) Trump fired the FBI Invesitgator in charge of Trump's investigation.  And made it very clear the reason he was fired was because of that investigation

4) Trump has publicly expressed regret over hiring Jeff Sessions as his attourney general because Sessions refueses to obstruct justice on Trump's behalf.

5) Despite all of the interference there are several convictions and indictments of Trump's handpicked inner circle...including the chief ececutive of his campaign, national security advisor,  and foreign policy advisors....and counting.

I have no confidence the current Congress would impeach the president given these facts.    But some Republican Senators said ending the investigation or attempting a presidential pardon would be grounds to do so.

Ahhhh, another day in paradise!  My leftist friends, keep up the whining, I'm slowly running out cheese!

Bob, The problem with your argument is that a pardon would end any ongoing investigations, so Congress would have no basis to impeach the president.  Under your theory, only very obvious crimes such as the President getting caught on video shooting somebody could result in impeachment.  Crimes like bribery, treason, obstruction of justice, money laundering and so on that require extensive investigation and subpoenas of records could never be used to impeach a president because there would be no way to gather any evidence.

And what I really want in the White House is a President that didn’t commit high crimes against the United States even if that means being stuck with Mike Pence.

Fritz, it is juvenile and cowardly to criticize someone while hiding in a private forum.

It seems Professors of Constitutional Law think Trump can pardon himself:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-not-wrong-about-pardoning-himself/2018/06/08/e6b346fa-6a6b-11e8-9e38-24e693b38637_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1d6cfdf2c353

The more important question to ask people is....should a president that is required a pardon be allowed to still serve in office?

And the answer you here from the "lock her up" crowd is "yes!"...so long as that president is on my team.   Pretty funny, aint it?

Whatever the "more importanat question(s)" may be, pjstroh asked the question about which Constutional law experts agree with Trump.

Constitutional law experts are all over the map - hence my post that it is an open question as to the president being able to pardon himself.
