You do realize that manufacturing is a small percent of drug costs, right? Most of the costs are R&D and the profit chain associated with drug distribution. So my question is, "Are you ok with the manufacturing associated with APIs for vital US medicine being dependent on an adversary?".
Well, what if the major pharmaceutical companies decided to move their drug supply chain back to the US? What if that represented a huge investment in US manufacturing and what if that only added a couple of cents to most medications? Would you support that? Well no need to speculate.
Novartis plans to invest $23 billion in US sites as Trump renews drug tariff threats | Reuters
Eli Lilly to invest $27 billion in new U.S. manufacturing
Bringing it all back home? Pfizer, Merck desire for US production amid Trump tariff tempest
J&J plans $55B investment in US, including 3 new plants
Smells like winning to me. US workers win. Vital medications will be in a secure supply chain. And yeah..It may add slightly to the costs, but maybe that's worth it...and if you were really worried about the costs of prescription drugs, you'd be looking at the costs of the buddy buddy distribution network, not manufacturing.
Jeeze...What happened to the days when liberals actually supported US workers and called for tariffs to prevent gutting of key US industries? When did they become the "anything goes for profit right wing Free Traders" they used to hate? I think I know when.
The tarrif is on the total cost of the drug and not the cost to manufacture it. I am all for US jobs but it is not the 1970s - 1980s. Manufacturing has become highly automated and the supply lines are near their source material/componets.
There was some Wall Street guy on this morning saying it would take 20 years to move the supply lines in a lot of industries. Most companies will just opt to wait Trump out because it is the most prudent course of action given Trump's instability.
The tarrifs also don't account for how in most modern manufacturing componets for finished products are manufactured all over the globe. For example just today Delta paused all their Airbus orders citing the Trump tax. A 350 frames are built in Utah and A 320 frames are built in Alabama. Trump is killing those American jobs with his tarrifs. Not to mention there is a plane shortage with all the Boeing problems. What could possibly go wrong? I mean it is not like planes and helicopters are falling out of the sky since Trump took over.
Most of the overseas production of drugs we import is for generics. Its an incredibly low profit margin business. And its also notoriously volatile.
The bigger issue is this: the collective tariff amount of the EU to the UNited States was 1.7%. They have been the poster child of good trade partners with the US - much like Canada. He's declaring a trade war with good trade partners. Thats just......stupid. And much like his shit with Canada the consequences go beyond trade. Europian countries are telling their citizens to vacation somewhere other than the US and to boycott US made products. That will linger beyond any ultimate "deal" from the master of bankruptcy in the White House.
The tariff is only on the manufacture of the drug. All other costs are US based and not subject to the tariff.
Delta could order their planes from Boeing which are made in America; no tariff and more American jobs.

Stupid Angry Charles characterizes Europe as our "adversary."
Like Trump, beyond stupid.
